So, if you want to blend two images youd create a layer mask on the image then select the gradient white to black and drag it across the image? I'm having some problems with that, it's putting a gradient on the images and not blending it at all.

YouTube, there random images. Heres what they said to do.
Copy one image to the other then make a layer mask on the image then use the white to black I think gradient to blend the image together, but the Image didnt fully blend or it just shown a normal gradient.

so you have two images? the top image is overlapping? you make a new mask on your top image? you made sure to select the mask not the image? using a black and white gradient it should work. simple way to mimic this is rectangular marquee tool change the feather to 50 or so and select the desiered area to delete just did this

With reducing the feath to 50% would I still use the gradient tool?

no set up the two images side by side make sure one is over lapping select your marquee tool change the feather to 50 select the area you want to delete and hit your delete button a few time and done you may need to move the top layer around a bit to get the look you want youtu.be/BMUTm9ZakNI simple tut that explains and shows

i dont think its so much the blending that you are learning its the technique with masking and using a gradient on your mask

The whole thing with the layer mask and the gradient, if you're using PS, you need to make sure that the layer mask is highlighted (has a white box around it) and not the image itself. that sounds like what your initial problem was. the other thing you can do is to apply the layer mask onto the image you want to blend, then choose any brush (with 0% hardness) with black as its color and brush away any parts that you want to get rid of. Reversely, if there are any mistakes, you simply change the color to white and brush it over the mistake and it brings your image back
