GIMP if it's available, I'm not sure if it works for Linux.
You can also try the 30 day trials for Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. You can purchase those if you have the money later down the line.

It can be, but once you look up things like tutorials and just do trial and error it gets easier. There's a lot of good tutorials you can find by searching google or using deviantart and searching there.

It's always more difficult if you don't know what type of design you wish to learn first. Web Design, Large Art (all different kinds), or anything.. It's always best to think of what you would really like to do, then go looking for those specific type of tutorials, although it does also help to perhaps try do several types of art, that way you learn more stuff, and are able to implement techniques from each to one single image.
As for text, it's difficult even for the professional of designers. No doubt people will go through a lot of fonts, colours, positions etc just for simple text on a simple piece. Practice and experimentation is the best.

As it's been stated, tutorials are always the best place to look. Once you determine what you want to make that is.

Would youtube tutorials work? of course. youtube tutorials are great if u have never used the program before because u can visually see the tools creating the effects. have you tried a few in-browser flash programs? I don't know too much about linux but if you have flash working I'll give u some links to websites that act like programs, you can even save files and such.

I would say hit youtube up like there is no tomorrow learn and watch all tutorials you can! anything that hits your interest find out how to make scan lines, to make a glossy button, how to create a planet in the middle of space. anything you can get your hands on then once "you think" you learned enough about the tools and features of your program start hitting up all text and image Tutorials learn from those once you realize you know what they are talking about and trust me no one knows what you mean if you say grab your rectangular marquee tool feather it to 50px highlight the selection and delete then change your layer to soft light with the opacity of 60[/b] anywho once you get the lingo find an image made with the same program as yours on the net once you have it remake it from scratch don't use the image for nothing but reference
last but not least i see you have a forum but i suggest joining a graphic design forum i myself am looking for a well established message board aswell not very many out there just make sure its active with lots of members i mean 1,ooo to 2,ooo that way you know you have a huge diverse group of artist not just a close group that all have the same views and style.(that's the worst)

deviantArt has a lot of useful stuff for you. You can use stock images, which are images people put up for designers to edit suiting their needs. Messing around with some stock images is probably a good way to start. They also have tutorials aplenty there as well as Gimp brushes. I used Gimp for quite a while back when I reformatted my computer and lost the product key for my Paint Shop Pro. x) Planet Renders is really nifty, too. It gives you images of characters from anime, video games, etc. with the background already cut out. ^^
Tutorials: Glowy Text Glossy Metal 3D Text Signature Tutorial
The biggest bit of advice I can give you is DO NOT LET YOUR PROGRAM LIMIT YOU. As long as you have the creativity and determination, you can create anything with Gimp that other people can create with Photoshop. After you get used to Gimp's tools, you can look at PSP and PS tutorials and adapt them for Gimp by yourself. I've learned to do things with PSP by looking at PS tutorials.
