editing program???

I've always loved graphic design, and I've manipulated, rather crudely, images with Paint on my laptop and on Photobucket. I've finally gotten ambitious and I want to actually learn how to do it properly. For starters, what is a good program to use (preferably something I could download for free C: !) and why?

GIMP is one of my favorite free graphics programs. It's very similar to Photoshop, which many professionals happen to use. Although it's a bit hard to understand at first, there's hundreds of tutorials out there to help. Another one is Paint.Net. It's not as advanced as GIMP, but it's extremely easy to use. It doesn't have the clean scissors tool that GIMP has, which you use to 'cut' and image and it slightly blurs the edges, but you can still do a ton of things with it. I believe these are some of the best free editing software, but you could find more by searching 'free image editing software' if you'd like :]

well, I use an old version of photoshop (cs2), but when im on the road, or not at home (where the program is) i just use pixlr.com/ - since it doesnt require any download or whatever, other then flash. Since it is flash based, though, it can be a bit laggy at times.

its not as good as my program at home, but it does the job for me and it might be useful for ya
