I've noticed a lot of images with borders around their text, and they say they're made with GIMP. I use GIMP all the time, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to add the text border. I've looked at tons of tutorials, but they're all very cryptic on what to do. Could anyone tell me how to do that kind of thing?

Would you be able to give an example? Not sure what you're meaning by 'borders around their text'?. Hehe sorry.

Click on your text layer. Right click in the little window and select 'Alpha Selection' Then up the top Select > Grow. Set pixels to 3. Create a new transparent layer and place it underneath your text layer. Choose the colour you want, and bucket fill the gap that has been created around your text. Select > None.
