It's not about winning. I'm just concerned about forum owners. It used to be easy to identify people based on e-mail. And we've lost that feature for a global login, that's not even convincing.

According to ryan you can identify people based on their global login though. A global login is not equivalent to an e-mail address. Even if you knew someone from a different service, you couldn't detect them via e-mail. E-mail addresses are identities. It's terrible if main admins can't see it.

A global login is your identity for proboards though. And like I said to Dylan in the other thread. Sorry for getting frustrated. ://

You can think of it as ProBoards' way of masking your true identity?

You can think of it as ProBoards' way of masking your true identity? It's not identity theft here. All we are talking about, is a very primitive way of getting a mental note of who you are...

Email addresses aren't necessarily the main way to track spam. Over half of the time, you don't even bother to care until you come across a spam post on the forum. It's then when you check out the account. E-mail addresses are the only true identity to an account. It also provides an offsite source of communication. And many admins do associate e-mail addresses and usernames. If they spot something new, they may expect something malicious, beforehand. We provide you the ability to ban a user's global account so that they can never come back to your forum with the same email address. As for the email situation, as Ryan mentioned the Mass Email page is still in the works -- but I'm sure we can make the ability to email a specific member a function that it supports, so you can still directly contact any member you want. In terms of identifying if a single user has multiple accounts on your forum, that is literally two clicks away. It's very, very easy to do on v5.

There's still one thing that bugs me. An e-mail address is a piece of information that personalizes an account. If admins can't see that, it's hard to get a mental note of an account. For example, someone could register and cause trouble multiple times, but we can't determine if it is the same member, because of the information loss. These small pieces of information make forum accounts personal. And e-mails can be created with just a few clicks. It's not major identity theft.

Is it just the email addresses that you're touching? Since Ryan is so keen on telling us that "v5 is all about security," I was curious as to whether other fields would be touched like the age, location, gender and IM contacting options.

If someone creates multiple email addresses, you won't know it's the same person. If we show you which member accounts use the same IP / are linked to one global account, that's much simpler.

But accounts will become less and less personal to a forum. Is this a social networking attempt of forums?
