While I understand these the new thing now, I'm a admin wishing to ease the fears of my members about it.
We have a multiple account rp forum. I have a account for admin duties, and several character accounts. What will be changing that I have a basic version to tell them? While I understand it basically, I'm not good in explaining it fully to my members who are not the most technologically inclined.

You can tell them:
"There is a new system coming in ProBoards v5. This system allows you to have all of your character accounts connected to one email address. It also allows for you to switch between each of your character accounts in a matter of seconds."

shortyverrett94's explanation is very simple and correct. The new system is amazing for RPG forums.
There should be no concerns. Simply, starting in v5 you will login with an email address instead of a username. It won't be any more difficult than it is now. And if you have multiple accounts then it will be even better, since you can have all your accounts tied to that single email. You login one time and you're done. You'll pick which account you want to be on the forum. At any time, in 2 clicks you can switch to another account you have on that forum.

I've told them this- and their main question is, "I have different passwords for different forums...and I like that. If they crack my account due to a password something or whatever, that means they have control over -all- my accounts right?" I can understand their concern- I mean I have a secure password in my belief, and most people do- until it gets cracked. I now use capitals, numbers, and signs in mine, but not many people due because of the hassle.
What should I tell them about this part though?

The new login isn't located on the forum what-so-ever. So no admin could leak info about it. Its on a secure server. Also. No one can see a persons email. So someone looking to crack an account would have to randomly guess their email out of every possible email combination as well as then guessing their password out of every possible combination. The admins have already confirmed that it is very secure. And the likely-hood an account will be cracked is very very very slim.

I would be concerned as well, except for one fact. Remind them that emails are private in v5. That means no one but them knows what email they are logging in or the password they end up using with that account. That literally means for someone to crack their Global account that person would need to guess their email out of all the emails in the world and the guess (or crack) their password. As long as they aren't making their login email public no one will even know where to start cracking their account. If you don't know the email I use to login to ProBoards, do you think you could crack my password? The answer is no, you wouldn't even know where to start. Edit: Shorty beat me to it!

Just to add - you should always have a secure password. Both letters and numbers, at least 8 characters long -- at the very minimum. No one's going to guess your password if you make it secure.

Will a forum admin be able to control or monitor this process?
Possibly to prevent abuse and/or ban evasion.

Will a forum admin be able to control or monitor this process? Possibly to prevent abuse and/or ban evasion. Global logins are now managed on our secure sever. Admins have no control over the registration process. This is to protect members from malicious activity. This also means abuse is not a factor. As for you concern regarding bans you have the option to ban a member by Global Login. This would ban all of their accounts, including any new ones they make from accessing your forum.

Will you be able to tell if two accounts on your board are backed by the same global login?
Or for that matter, have a config setting to forbid duplicates entirely?

Yeah, for number 2 I may be an admin that wishes to enforce a "one account per user" policy.

Yeah, for number 2 I may be an admin that wishes to enforce a "one account per user" policy. You can already see if one user has multiple accounts (with just two clicks away from any post they make or from their profile)

I'm just trying to get up-to-speed on this Global log-in thing, and have a question. Well, two, actually. Let's say I open my new global login account under the email addy I've mainly used to register on Proboards. Will it then automatically 'harvest' and add *all* of my proboard accounts that I've previously registered with under that same email address? For example, I'm a member here on support with my bluebayou username, I'm an admin of several Proboards under the "admin" username, and I'm also regular member on some other Proboard forums with an entirely different username. Will all of these different accounts (for different forums) automatically get vetted into my new global log-in if the email used to register them was identical? Or do I have to add them individually to my new global account? If I used different email addys to register, can I then still combine them into one global login by changing the email addy's on each account to be the same one? Also, will anybody viewing my global profile have access to seeing which forums I'm a member (or an admin) of? If so, would this info not be included if any of those forums are private forums? Do these questions even make sense? Thanks!
