And don't forget that Beta Zone will give us a chance to see what codes/plug-ins we still need before our forums go live. We'll be able to request what we don't have before our members see our forum.

That's great that we'll have a chance to get it all together before rolling it out to our members.

That's great that we'll have a chance to get it all together before rolling it out to our members. and by the same token, you can have your members test out V5 features on your V5 beta board.

Good to know! Thanks, Ritchie. Important note though: things done on the beta board that you make will most likely BE LOST. So, it is 100% for testing. (Certain things will be exportable and savable... I believe this includes skins, plugins, and codes. )

(Certain things will be exportable and savable... I believe this includes skins, plugins, and codes. ) I have a meeting scheduled to discuss ways to notify users of this exact fact. I'm sure the admins will be well aware its a temporary copy, but I worry about members of the forum. Something similar to our maintenance mode bar might work. Here's an example of the maintenance mode bar:

Good idea, Ryan. I like the concept of having a warning that the copy is a temporary test forum and that settings and new posts will be lost when the forum goes live.
Is there any chance we could keep the test forum for a little while after our sites are converted in order to copy settings that can't be transferred?
ETA I've noticed lately that Bookmarks has been added to the menu bar. I LIKE IT!!!

Is there any chance we could keep the test forum for a little while after our sites are converted in order to copy settings that can't be transferred? I can't say one way or the other how that will end up working right now. Most of the important things will be exportable like themes and plugins. Anything else would just be a matter of settings which you could easily write down to keep track of. If you happened to still be using headers and footers then any new codes you make would be on you to copy and save for later.

I have had bad experience with upgrading from other forum products when it comes to losing a lot of codes.
Even on my board, for example, I have several codes which almost never get support on them and they are a bit of a vital function on my community.
How would we go about fixing those if they break; or to get them upgraded?
I do like the idea of having plug-ins, as it does help the error of "copy-pasting" stuff; yet when some people have to go in and edit specific functions for custom use what will happen then if those functions are not areas we can access in the plug-in?
An example is moving where things are displayed, the normal code may have it in one area but you may have to do a lot of finagling to move it to where you want it applicable.
Are we expected to do this through css...? Not use them at all? Conform to the same exact layout as thousands of others with no appeal at what is different more than a smear of colour for a background and banner to set them apart?
I figured to throw these questions out there because mainly my community is severely concerned, and excited, for V5; yet the functionality of the site (and it's current features) are what is holding us back from really wanting this upgrade.
This happened similarly with say, wikia's constant "upgrade" to their styles which end up rendering an entire site useless since they are formatted in such a way that is no longer applicable to the "current forced style" shoved down their throats.
It winds up being one of those things of "upgrade or get out". And personally, so much time has been put into graphics and getting a system set for a community that if you strip away the aesthetics of what that community has come together for then you loose all appeal or operation holding it together.
I know that in the past I have had to delete whole forums because no one would offer support for their codes and there was no way to fix the damage that a "forced upgrade" can do.

In v5 you can use a plugin. So you go to the plugin library (a central hub for plugins) and find a sidebar mod that sounds good to you. You install it. You go to the settings page of the plugin and change the settings you want. Enter your content in nice text boxes. You decide you want the bar on the right side, you change that option in a drop down menu and it works. That sounds absolutely and totally AWESOME!!! Anyone who at least once has accidently messed up the board by deleting a single dot in the footer knows what I'm talking about
