I know one of the nice features about V5, is that it automatically saves your posts as you type, in-case your browser crashes or something. But for some reason, this is disabled by default, and you have to manually turn it on in Profile -> Settings Tab -> "Enable Drafts" option. Most members probably won't bother doing this or even know it is their. I think It should definitely be turned on my default.

It is resource intensive and that is why it is off by default. It also doesn't work in all browsers. Since it is not 100% reliable and it uses up resources we have it off by default. Should a member choose to enable it that is up to them. It will not be on for everyone by default.

Do you know what browsers it does work on? I tried Firefox, but I don't think it works. It would be nice if this feature was improved. Some other forum software have it.

It works in all browsers that support HTML5. This includes Firefox. As people stop using old browsers it will improve itself. We will hopefully however be improving it further in a future v5.x update. But the browser support won't change.

I'm unaware of the Drafts feature being resource intensive. We recoded it to use HTML5 LocalStorage and it shouldn't have any issues there.
I just tested it myself and it worked perfectly in Chrome. I went to create a topic, typed a message, closed the browser, came back to the same board, clicked to create a topic, and my message appeared on the screen.

I have verified as well that mine is working in Firefox.
Sorry for the misunderstanding and any confusion flyoffacliff. Last I heard from our programming team this feature was resource intensive. When we switched it to use HTML5 is apparently was no longer. Patrick didn't correct me until just now. It is still off by default however because browsers need to support HTML5 for it to work like I mentioned above.
Thank you.

That's a great question flyoffacliff. I'll let Patrick decide.

Old browsers don't support that; only modern browsers do. In terms of having it on by default, I don't personally have a preference either way.

Is there a way to turn this on for all members by default? I know a lot of our members are not very tech savvy and don't mess with their setting much at all.

For most of the reasons listed above we do not turn it on by default. People can decide themselves what things to have enabled and disabled.
