I'm having a similar issue, though I'm not particularly code savvy with these sort of things.

I followed your instructions step-by-step, but like some have mentioned all I'm getting is the image code in the MiniProfile, rather than the image itself. I've double-checked all the names listed, and the process you put up, and everything is in order and correct. I've tried to amend the issue myself, but nothing I've tried seems to make any difference.

The code I put up (as you posted it) is:
<div class="$[miniprofile_class]" {foreach $[user.custom_field]} {if $[user.custom_field.name] == "MiniProfile Background Image"}style="background-image: url('$[user.custom_field.value]');"{/if}{/foreach}>

Is there some sort of change to this that I need to make, to fix the issue?

it doesn't do what you want though. it only puts the background on the mini-profile, not the whole cell.

Alright, I will use the picture that Stars Fall Too posted as my explanation. You see how in the picture she posted, that the wooden image is only the background for that small rounded part, and their is some blue background behind that? The plugin adds the background image to the blue background part, and not the rounded part. Does that make sense?

Hey Shorty. Take a look at my test board this is with the template mod. I removed the plugin here. The only thing is that it doesn't follow down the page.

The other thing I noticed is that the backgrounds also shows in the conversation page with the template mod

If you want to remove the link from you MP  go to  Admin Home/Members/Custom Profile Fields. Click on (View/Edit) and select "Anything". The url's should disappear from your MiniProfiles. 

It worked for me.
