It'd be cool if having selected say five members there was the option from the memberlist page to email them or add them to a group.

Certain actions require more detailed focus and decision making. We tried to avoid making those things happen en masse. Emailing the members can be done from the email page. There is a quick and easy to use member search on that page itself. At a certain point we can't place every action and make it doable on every page, there is lots of overlap already with other features. As for groups they are far more complex in type and scope in v5. Different people have different permissions when it comes to groups and the groups themselves are more complex. You really need to either be in the group page itself adding members en masse like you want or the opposite be in a person's profile adding them to multiple groups at once. But adding many people to potentially many groups starts to add too much room for error and not enough available data for each half of the equation.
