Try this code instead.

.shoutbox { width: 500px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; }

Relic: I have a solution, but it will only apply to shouts that are on the page when you first load it.


Structure > Layout Templates > Shoutbox > Individual Posts: Add this to line 2:

<div class="$[shoutbox_post.content_class] content-box{if $[shoutbox_post.even]} even{/if}"{if $[shoutbox_post.edited]} title="$[shoutbox_post.edited]"{/if}>

Then add this to the bottom of your style sheet in Themes > Colors & Styles > Style Sheet:

.shoutbox_messages .shoutbox-post.even { background-color: #111; }

Change the color in red to the color you desire.
