Ricky referred me to this section from this thread. I just want to know if there's a way to create calendar events but not show it as a forum thread, just like what we had on v4. Ricky advised that I unhide the Calendar board, add the events there, then hide it again. Is there a better method of doing this?

I don't use the Calendar at all now. It just seems too clunky and unwieldy.
I used the V4 version all the time, but I really want a Calendar that works without showing threads in the forum.

I agree. It's just a shame that the calendar would be there but not used. I hope there's something they can do.
If I'm their programmer I will just probably tweak that part where we create events to show the calendar on the options list but not on the main page.

Because of the structure and function of your forum being a forum, events must be threads.
An event is simply a thread with a date associated. It's not the other way around. Events are not things that have a thread attached. They are one and the same. You can't have an event without a thread. It's a forum at its core, and threads are it's skeleton.
Now, that being said you do have a few alternatives if you want to make events with no threads. This might shed insight, by the way, into why they are threads.
1) You could make a hidden board and call it events. Set permissions so people can view threads, but they can't create them. You could even disable posting in the board. Now whenever you want an event go ahead and create it in your event board. You could lock each thread as you create it if you didn't disable posting. You now have events that aren't threads. They are simply the post that explains the event (no matter how simple that may be. Even just a title with a date).
2) You could make your own calendar. Go build a custom page and build your own calendar. Add you own events to it manually. There is an infinite number of ways to do this one so I wont even both with specifics.
Either way realize this. You want to make events and you don't want them to be threads. But one of the number one things people do when an event is posted (think about Facebook) is to start commenting on it and discussing it. Most people most of the time want events discussed. And on a message board that's really the point. I can only imagine that on a forum where people see an event they can't reply to that they are going to go and create a thread somewhere like a General Talk about an upcoming event they see in the Calendar. That's people nature. That's the nature of a forum.
Events will remain threads. (or should I say, Threads will continue to have an Events option).
Thank you.
Edit: Please understand as well, this isn't really something we can even change. It's so core in the way things were built. You can't remove the rest of the car from the engine and expect the engine to work on its own.

Thanks for the explanation. I think I will try option one, but I have bookmarked it for a day when I don't feel so dozy, having been to the dentist for a root canal earlier. . . . . .

Hi Ryan Roos! Thank you for your suggestions.
I guess the only way to do this now is to unhide the Calendar forum so it will show on the options when creating an event.
