Can we get this in threads? I preferred the old system where you could easily click to go to the first or last post.

The pagination always displays the last page. You can simply click that and scroll down (or click and then hit 'End' on your keyboard and scroll up a little).
Also, and I'm not saying your idea is a bad one, I just don't quite get why there needs to be a dedicated button for this. Why do you want to skip all the content of the thread. It can't be to reply. You can do that from any page at any time. Is the last post just the only relevant one to you? I don't get it. Again, not saying that it's bad. I just want to understand the logic behind not reading the thread itself. That's kind of the point of it to me (though that doesn't mean it's the only right way to think about threads).
Thank you.
Edit: If you still really really want this you could request a plugin for it. It may be possible to do it that way.

I think that on a thread with new content, users want to begin with new content, not scroll all the way through to find new stuff.

If you click on a New icon it takes you to the oldest unread post. The button you're asking for just goes to the last post. What if new content started 3 pages before the last post? We already coded multiple things to take you to the content you haven't read yet. Clicking a link in your participated box or the new icon on a thread in a board, like I explained, will go to the oldest unread content of a thread. That will guarantee that users will begin with new content. So this already exists.
