Oh, and there is an extremely detailed guide for members wanting to upgrade their accounts. How do members know about this? Why do they need a guide? Why did I have to spend an hour getting your stupid upgrade to work which in the end I only did by chance? I may have been mixing up "upgrading" with "reactivating"; maybe the following post could be answered: <abbr data-timestamp="1359926037000" class="time" title="Mon Feb 04 2013 08:13:57 GMT+1100 (AUS Eastern Daylight Time)"></abbr>
Post by administrator on <abbr data-timestamp="1359926037000" class="time" title="Mon Feb 04 2013 08:13:57 GMT+1100 (AUS Eastern Daylight Time)">Feb 4, 2013 at 8:13am</abbr> A further nuisance has emerged: when members log in for the first time to the 'upgraded board' they now also have to reactivate their account. This is a fiddly-affair and must be annoying especially to members who on the old board were Activated. Moderator, Midget Car Panorama.

Hi speedstox12, I would just like to jump in here and offer to answer absolutely any questions you have and offer my help. If you could give me any more specific details about which members are having problems, and what errors they're encountering, I would love to help. If you have members who are having issues upgrading their accounts, I recently wrote a extremely detailed guide here for members who needed guidance. Maybe you can help with this one: hi all i have after 5 attemps over three nights got into the site. it would not reconise the new authorise code it gave me i am now in without the aid of my sons help (not bad for an old midget racer] hope to post some photos and articals (but will need my son for that)

1: members unable to log in My site experienced this by only a couple of people, out of almost 1400 members, and those folks just didn't quite get it right and kind of screwed themselves. All others were able to login with their usual v4 accounts, follow the directions afterwards and update their accounts properly. Q. When you say 'members', how many are you referring to? All? A couple? Most? Was their initial attempt to login with their normal v4 account credentials?
Members equals more than one that's at least 2 too many
My question goes towards a typical troubleshooting process, that if nothing else might help the administrator narrow down the problem of 'who' is experiencing problems based on commonalities between them. But I'm glad to see you have a true rose-colored pair of glasses on. Glad to see EVERYTHING else in your life is so perfect... except for logging in to the forum.
2: having to reactivate membership (a itiresome task) I myself didn't actually do anything with those who didn't get logged in right. They made new accounts on their own, received their activation codes and went from there... and just told me about it later.Q. How are you 'reactivating' accounts? We admins don't see email addresses of members anymore so I'm wondering what it is you actually have to do.We are going through some tiresome process we think is called reactivation that often doesn't work (i.e. more than once) . Don't start me on your ambiguous terminology.tsrwright are you the administrator of your forum? Doesn't sound like it otherwise you would know that the admin can't 'reactivate' accounts, thus my question to the admin 'how are you doing it', which was a nice way of asking wtf are you doing trying to reactivate an account... you can't!
3: some having to register a new membership Yes, this is what a few of my members had to do as well, however I found that this small group was some of the very old members who still have AOL email addresses. Not sure it that affected anything or not, but we all know how AOL used to not work right years ago. But I think it's important to look at the metrics and see just what the percentage is of those who do and don't have problems.Quite 'few' on MCP, not counted though. What's that got to do with it.Let me repeat... a typical troubleshooting process that help the administrator narrow down the problem of 'who' is experiencing problems based on commonalities between them. 4: a very small type size (unreadable) for posting messages Yea, this isn't even a problem, it's just something the admin hasn't got to yet to adjust font size through the Visual editor, which goes for the rest of the configurations for the look and feel of the site. Q. Are you the admin? Have you gone through all the configurable items in the Themes > Colors & Styles > Visual Editor ? There are a lot and I found it actually helps to open up every one of them... yea it's a lot of scrolling, but it's much better to see it all and just scroll through them and watch the changes as they happen. And here's a tip, the items that are grayed out are still selectable for editing, you just can't see the immediate result in Visual Editor because you don't have that particular section open yet. As you click through the mini-forum on the right side of Visual Editor, different options open up on the left side for editing. You must be kidding.
So every piece of software you have ever used you've never had to configure preferences of any kind on? You just use whatever defaults it comes with? You haven't adjusted anything in your browser to fit your needs? Good for you, you're one of the fortunate ones... actually the only one. As for the new forum layouts, there a lot of possible options to choose from for those not satisfied with defaults OR want to mirror their old site. BTW the default font on the forums is serif at 400, which is about 12px and even at 1680x1050 is very readable, unless there was a script on your old font that was changing it. As the forum admin I'm sure you could probably enlighten us on that.
5: the "new look" not being welcomed - by members who manage to get into the forum Again, not what I even call a problem because the 'new look' is a default just waiting for the admin to give it the same old look as before. So I'm .... hat you wanted and look the way you wanted was old, unsecure, resource extensive and just plain inefficient methodology that causes a lot of backend sustainment. But, it worked so everyone was happy, everyone except those responsible for protecting your data and your site and keeping it all running.
Cheers, and hang in there. There's a lot of help here if you just ask... ask for specifics thought. Just saying its broke and sucks won't get it done.
Nor will just being complacent and blaming the customer.
We ARE the customers and by NOT being complacent is why OUR forums are working! Maybe if help was asked for instead of whining you, or your administrator, would be done by now.

A simple question: how do Yahoo! implement upgrades and similar events on their sites without any of these problems?

ProBoards guys, whoever you are, why don't you do something about the chaos of ordinary people trying to run boards while getting on with their lives instead of calling us whingers and expecting us to jump thro' numerous hoops.
Why, without any notice did we had to go though a shambolic reactivation process just to log-in again.
You fling around remarks like 'Maybe if help was asked for instead of whining you, or your administrator, would be done by now' so why don't you answer the three members queries posted above?
Who are you anyway? Are you amateurs at this business?

Did you even read my first post? I have no affiliation to proboards other than having a forum with them, but being with them since 2003, going through this v5 upgrade and having experienced a few issues (nothing like you're reporting though) I feel I should at least ask some questions to possibly gain a better understanding of your issues in case I can help in anyway. So much for offering up some help to try and get you guys on your feet. You're on your own now. Good luck

Let me get this right. To 'Reply' I hit 'Quote' - is that right? If not what? What's wrong with something like? When I try and reply to DeltaDart's latest bunch of insults I am unable to "quote" him/her but get the stuff above. Tried it about 5 times It seems our simple little Midget Car Panorama board has become immersed in a beta test of a half-sorted upgrade. Upgrade to what?

So if you guys, whoever you are, or whatever you role here is, can't or won't help, for example with the members queries posted above, who does?

I'd like to point out two things here; Firstly, anybody that doesn't have a green, orange or red name isn't Support Staff - they're just members that have been around lately playing with v5, and offering help to people with problems. Anybody in green and orange is a voluntary (read; unpaid and with real-world responsibilities away from here) staff member. Red-named members however are ProBoards Administrators - people whose full time jobs are at the ProBoards office, and who are directly working on v5. Both Brian and Michael have already offered help, Michael going so far as to say that he will sort out any problems you or your members are having. I've tagged both, so I'd wait for one of them to turn back up when they're next working. And lastly; the reply button is at the bottom of the page, to the right of the Quick Reply title, where it's always been. Your forum hasn't had that much in the way of modification (none that I can see, actually), so the change-over (and getting used to the slightly tweaked appearance) should be incredibly easy for you, and your members. Regarding the problems logging in, I'll let one of the others handle that (as they have offered to), because I've yet to experience problems like this, and don't really have the knowledge to fix them. So, could we perhaps stop with the name calling (this applies to ALL parties concerned), calm down a little, and work towards getting you back on track? =]

The origins of this thread was in regard to problems for members getting into the Midget Car Panorama forum. It does not appear to be a problems alone to that site. I notice various messages where this problem has hit other forums and members have had to completely re-register in some cases. That should never have happened but would seem to be one of several - and probably the most important hitting MCP - in that long time members cannot sign in. Why should they have to register again to join up with MCP? This so-called wonderful graduation from v4 to v5 looks to have not been carefully thought through. As I have said before "when Yahoo have upgrades THESE SORT OF THINGS DO NOT HAPPEN". Why do they occur on Proboards?

As I have said before "when Yahoo have upgrades THESE SORT OF THINGS DO NOT HAPPEN". Why do they occur on Proboards? Probably because Yahoo has not totally re-written their forum software for ten years or more. No major changes means no major update problems. As a result, Yahoo forums have lost a lot to competitors. Mind you, I still belong to Yahoo groups, but in the last week there have been only nine new posts for seven forums in which I'm a member. That outlook is NOT good, since similar forums elsewhere (ProBoards and Facebook, among others) get much more traffic. ProBoards v5 is still in Beta (beta=testing) and the v5 conversion screen on the Admin Panel states this. It also warns that problems may come up and asks that they be reported to be fixed. No one is required to update during this phase. I'm sorry v5 isn't "completed" enough for you, but the v5 development status has been updated constantly for the last year. It is not ProBoards' fault if it wasn't read. If you need help getting members logged in, it is a Beta bug. Tell Michael where in the process the problems begin and he'll do his best to get the problem sorted for you. The best of luck to you.
