It's pretty simple.. I've tried to stop google bots from jumping up my Page Views.. But it does not work..

In Global Headers= <meta name="robots" content="noindex">

Patrick Clinger=BTW - you should place that inside your <head> tag. If your forum is v5, you can do this in Admin > Themes > Layout Templates > Forum Wrapper

This seems to be not working.. I've a small board.. We pay our $8.00 a month..But it seems that PB want's more money due to Page Views based on googlebot hits..

Why does this code not work?

Yes.. I know that. I could also use "Global Messages" plug in to tell my Guests that.. I asked why the code does not work..

Looks like at the very least you'll want:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">
googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/03/using-robots-meta-tag.html

But bots aren't required to follow meta tags, so this method can be somewhat unreliable.

Friends don't let friends use v5.

Ok I changed that from "<meta name="robots" content="noindex"> to <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">



Tim..will this work?

Blueshead I have tried my self to get google webmaster tools verified in the head and no luck, you have seen my other post, it is a nightmare trying to slow them down. Backlinks anywhere across the internet can set them off.. I wish the bots would leave pages alone for a year or something once they've been indexed, unless content changes, but they would have to check the page to see if its changed lol You can't win only proboards can slow this down, if at all possible.

leon.. this takes about 2-3 weeks to kick in.. I'm on 2 weeks and I'm down to less then 1,000 page views a day.. It does not work right away.. But in the long run..
It slows the bots down..

Also these scripts have been used for Years and accepted legally by Google with no ARGUMENT.. There are no tricks, etc here.. It's how it is on the Interwebby..

From what i read if I use:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">
The bots will index the entry page but not follow any more links, so in theory google bot will still find your pages, but more like 1 at a time.. I might give it a try, what have I got to lose..

It say's "noindex" so they will not index you're page, it also say's "nofollow" so they will both not index you're page or follow links unless you remove "noindex" and "nofollow" correct?

What works for me,, Might not work for you..

Basically as you said. googlebots will hit your main page.. But not Index further...

Oh well this all has made my mind up for me.. It seems my post on a similar thread has been locked by proboard admins.. We can't win really.. So, take care guys.. I am going to seek other ways of making my forum white label without costing a bomb.. proboards are not going to make another penny out of me.. I am sorry that you don't truly listen to your customers.. Debating customer issues like this on an open forum really is not the way to treat, those who pay you.

ps.. You can't make google analytics work on the forum, that says it all.. If it did work.. People would know the truth...

I'm sorry that you feel this way leonjb. We listened to everything you said and provided a detailed response and explanation to everything you brought up. We gave you solutions to all of the problems you had. I am sorry that you feel you were not helped. The other thread was locked because we were explaining things in circles. Patrick Clinger did not feel it was being helpful anymore since everything you kept asking had already been explained to you already. I even made a final post explaining just that and even answered the last question you asked(for a second time) just so you wouldn't be left hanging.

The thread is there for everyone to read and for everyone to find answers to the questions you asked and claims you made. You have not been censored or ignored. Even now I am responding to you, like I have every time you posted. You had the CEO of the company talking to you directly even. You can look at nearly any feature in v5 to see that we listen to our customers. We listen to our customers everyday, but communication is a two way street.

Don't misrepresent the facts or that we didn't help you. We did. I'm sorry if you didn't like the answers we gave you. I'm sorry to see you leave over such things.

If you're using Headers & Footers, you're doing it wrong.
