Make sure that your image is 16x16 pixels, that you save it as an .ico file, and that it's hosted somewhere (if you have your own web server space, that will work, or else sites like photobucket or the like will work as well.) Then put this in your global header: <link type="image/x-icon" rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />
Where favicon.ico is the URL to your icon.

You can also use .png files for favicons. <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://linktoyourhostedimage.png" type="image/x-icon" />
Plug that into your global header, towards the top, and replace "linktoyourpostedimage.png" with the link to the hosted file. I tested this in one of my test boards and it works fine. example of favicon

I love this idea and tried it. And it works in IE but not Chrome. Any suggestions?

Hey Murphie! I went to your site and can definitely see a favicon. What browser are you using? If you're using firefox and are just seeing a little grey globe, read this. @ ~ Luv ~, I'm not sure why it isn't working in Chrome. I just noticed that the favicon for my test board isn't working there either, but it's fine in FF. Chrome. Wut r u doing?! Chrome. STAHP!

Hi, meghansarasanI don't know why Chrome isn't accepting it. I've asked my members to let me know what they are seeing. It's working in IE, FF, and Safari so far. I've done some "googling" and most say to clear your cache. I've done that and it's still not showing in Chrome. Other responses are saying that favicon coding is stubborn and it takes awhile for some browsers to update it, but then finally "boom" one day it is there. Maybe Chrome is just one of those stubborn ones!

Since some time last year, Chrome will only show a favicon if it is in the <head> section of the page (or located on the server, like the default PB icon is). If you're using V4, you can't access the <head> element so you'll have to live with it for now. If you're using V5, you do have access to the <head> element so you can simply add the same code before the closing </head> tag in the Global Wrapper layout template for each theme. If you don't know whether you're on V4 or V5, you're probably on V4.

Hello, Shrike, and thank you. You've given me my answer. We're in v4. I'm so reluctant to leave it. So many skins and smilies have been added. I don't know what will become of them in v5. But sadly, already, much of my coding isn't working properly, and some not at all. Am I correct that all forums will be converted to v5 at April's end? Again, thanks for solving the mystery!!!!

If you haven't already, make a BetaZone copy of your forum here and you can see what your forum will be like when you upgrade as well as make any changes you'll need to. You can choose to delay upgrading until the end of 2013 if you need more time to prepare. If you have more questions about V5, feel free to ask in the V5 Beta boards.

Thank you, Shrike. I will. I am co-admin on my forum. The admin that joined on PB didn't trust himself to make code changes. That's why he brought me on board. I'm going to PM him to take us to the beta test zone so I can start preparing. We have over a dozen skins, and almost 3 dozen more smilies than the standard PB board. I'm sure I'll have a lot of work ahead of me. But it's good to know we'll have until the end of 2013 to make the final leap. I appreciate the links and your knowledgeable help.

Yes, although you need to do for each one individually. Only things you put in your Headers & Footers will be applied to all themes, but we need to access the <head> element which is in the Layout Templates—those are individual for each theme. Go to Themes > Layout Templates > Global Wrapper and then copy/paste your favicon code ABOVE the closing </head> tag. Save the changes, then use the dropdown box at the top to select another theme then rinse and repeat for each one.
