Okay, think I've got it now.
Try replacing what I gave you earlier with this;
{foreach $[online_user]}
<div style="display: inline-block; margin-right: 5px;"><a href="$[online_user.href]" target="_parent">$[online_user.avatar_medium]</a></div>
{/foreach}
I've tried it in-browser, and it seems to work perfectly fine. =]
