Just a tip to some of the folks here that feel like they are spinning their wheels. Start over. That is what I did tonight. Now that I have spent several weeks in the guts of the new system and getting lost, I knew that I was pretty much overwhelmed.
Tonight, I converted another one of my test sites to V5 and decided to load my current skin and just follow the flow. I am amazed at how much smoother it is going for me. Oh sure, I have to recreate the few things I have finally managed to learn and add as plugins, CSS and so forth, but I really was like a dog chasing it's tail, I was spinning and overwhelmed. I was trying to fix things I had screwed up, for one thing. I just didn't understand what I was doing originally, and was getting frustrated to the pulling the hair out stage. Now... I'm going slow and easy, hopefully with a lot less angst. I also didn't understand how to use the active screen of our site on the right (or for some, on the bottom) so I could see changes as I applied them.
I know that a lot of us are A type personalities and once we get into a project, we want it done NOW! It's not going to happen. For a non-coder like me, we just have to ask for help and wait for an answer. Sometimes, the answer doesn't really address the problem, but Hey, it's conversation and let's us know we aren't alone in this adventure.
I really appreciate all the kind support I have received in the past few weeks. I hope to be able to apply the things I have learned with my newly converted site. I know I will be back asking for help, but, thank goodness, I have taken some screenshots and made notes in my Notepad, so I'm not nearly as discombobulated as I was some weeks ago.
Hang in there folks, we can do this.

Thank you, Sophia. No, I wasn't happy. In the past few weeks, I found out that some of my travels were not my fault at all, but a problem right here at Proboards with all their moving/shaping/reorganizing and so forth was changing things right before my eyes. But we don't know about that going on in the background until it impacts us and a friendly helper says, "You have an old version of the CSS, let me help you with that." Thank goodness for helpers that can spot the exact problem. (Thanks, Brian.)
We aren't through yet, folks, this is a project in progress. For the time being, I am just trying to get familiar with the various areas of the site that I have control over and those I do not, and learning to recognize the difference.

JJ, I love V5, but yesterday I had a major problem with hover (boards jumping on hover) & I was tearing my hair out trying to solve the issue. so sort of same as you, I started over again with the theme I was having problems with. Took me a few hours to get it back on track but was worth it - apart from one member sadly leaving because I took a few hours to re-ad the extra smilies

Oh no, Chrissie, I'm sorry you had the hassle. I'm also very sorry your member was so impatient.

Im waiting for when forums are forced to upgrade unless they opt-out.. Its coming in April, Support forum will be busy.. I think it may be a very stressful couple weeks when the forced upgrade occurs. This was one of the reasons that I upgraded early. It wasn't fun but, it wasn't all that bad either and we did have the ear of the proboards staff during that time. During the forced upgrade, I think the staff will have their hands full.

Aww thank you JJ Still can hardly believe anyone would leave a forum due to extra smilies being missing for a few hours though I was working my socks off to add everything back in but kept getting an error pop up when re adding the extra smilies.

Goodness, Chrissie, you have your hands full, that's for sure. I bet that member regrets leaving in a huff and will come back. We are all going to have impatient members, I think. Mine don't like changes, and big changes are coming. But I have been dropping plenty of hints in our daily chats so they won't be shocked as much and a bit confused for a few days.

JJ, most of the members love V5 - I upgraded my forum to it a couple of weeks ago. I was mainly worried about the older members (those in their 70's & 80's) getting the hang of it, but with some help they are getting along fine with the changes You are doing the right by dropping hints, so they wont be too shocked
