Hover Over Avatar for Information

For my forum here: click I was thinking about adding a feature that would be an added field while modifying your profile, just a certain amount of characters, and when you hover over your avatar, it appears as well as the a 50% transparent while color goes over the picture to better read the text. I would love this to be possible!

Have you converted your forum to V5 yet or have a copy of your forum in V5 or is this still V4.5? If V4.5, I kind of doubt anyone will want to write a code like that when it will be obsolete by the end of this month or at the latest, for those who opt out, the end of the year. I think the coders are busy converting their current codes that aren't a feature built in to V5 and probably setting up their own sites for V5.

If it is for V5 then you may want to head over to the plug-in requests board and check out plug-in already made and already requested that adds a custom field  (possible once a custom field is created the fade in stuff could be done outside the plugin) and if you see nothing that does that, go ahead and make a request but as you'll notice, there is a back-log of requests. 

That said, you are more than welcome to bump this topic (every 24 hours) just in case someone is interested.

No, it's not for v5 because I personally don't like v5 and when my forum is forced to convert to v5 I doubt I will keep it...
Is there a way to keep my forum old school? :/

We all will have to convert by the end of the year and I don't know why I keep saying the end of this month, it is the end of next month they will offer us to opt out until the end of the year.

But I want you to know I felt the same way at first. When I first looked at the admin panel in V5 I thought I was about to face a nightmare. I don't know when the last time you checked the admin panel on V5 but they have recently given us a option of "basic", "standard", and "legacy", meaning if you just want to change the very minimum of things, you can. Now I understand you already have a nice layout and you may wonder if you can ever get V5 to look the same, but you can come pretty darn close and may even make it better. In fact, my one test site in V4 has pretty much the same layout as your site. Fixed table on the left, tabs on the right and I really had no difficulties getting that layout set up. V5 Site. In fact, ProBoards now has a doc type so that opens up some pretty cool codes you can use that will be good on IE now. Example, the sideways text in my right tabs.


I'm the first to admit, I hate change, but I also know that I've grudgingly learned something new in the past and then wondered why I so worried about it in the first place.  I'll be more than happy to help you get your site as close to looking as it does now as we possibly can,  as will any of the helpers in the V5 board. I hope you don't give up on ProBoards yet.

I actually started looking into how you could do a hover affect over the avatar in V5 but haven't worked it out yet. But as far as getting someone to write a code for V4, I just don't see it happening with V5 so close but you never know.

I haven't seen the admin panel at all for v5 because the beta never worked for me so I just gave up. I have so far chose to opt out until the end of the year for v5 on my site.

A "basic" option? Does it look like v4 with the layout and not as modern like v5? I just love the simplicity of v4 and I have already put so much work into it and had many people custom write codes for me on this site that I doubt will work on v5... I also do not like change- no I hate it with all my being, especially when I am content where I am.

I would love it if you helped me, when the site converts, get it looking as close to as the way it does now with all the codes and such. And thank you for looking into the hover over avatar code!

When you say the beta never worked was it the copy of Proboards or was it a copy of your V4 forum (Sinners Touch)? That is what I'd suggest you do is make a V5 copy of your site. That way, a lot of the colors will transfer over. Maybe that is what you meant you did.

The basic option just gives you less to edit when setting up your forum and it still looks nothing like V4. (I'm sure you'll find that out or have already since you made a V5 site. By the way, if you get a V5 copy of Sinner's Touch you'll find that other site will come in handy, that is if that is what you meant. Like if you got something close to how you want it on your Sinner's Touch copy,  but want to tweak it, you can go over to the other site and make sure you are changing the right thing. That sort of thing.

What I meant when it didn't work is that I wasn't able to make a beta version of Sinners Touch... it just would not allow me to. I couldn't figure it out or something... but now I just made a completely different site that I put all the same codes on and updated it to v5.

I see you added the peek-a-boos along with a few other plug ins but your forum has moved over to one side. You may want to disable one plug-in at a time to see which one is doing that. Need to fix things before we really move to something else major.

I know the side table plug in isn't what you want since your panel is in the fixed position. Is that what you still want? A few things you can do is set your forum width to the width you want. I see two forum resize codes in your V4 global headers with two different sizes but I think the 756px is what you want. You may know this by now but go to: Admin > Themes > Advanced Styles & CSS Visual Editor and set the width, maybe go ahead and add your banner. While you are there, click on the css tab, scroll way to the bottom and you can add your rounded border by adding this to the end of the style sheet:

Well try to get the visual bones of your layout first, then move on to getting the boards like you want, and other things.

Oh, and I am doing step by steps with you if need be. I already added a real basic plug in for a fixed side table and added your border just to make sure it works.

Okay, thank you! I got what you told me to do done. I would love it if you guided me along because I would end up messing everything up otherwise! I checked the site you tested the codes on and it looks perfect, minus the pop-out side bar on the right, not exactly what I have on v4 but all well.

I got the wrapper and right side tab up but I can't get the left side bar to go up without appearing inside the wrapper.

I see you have been busy adding some things so I'm not sure how much I can help, because I don't know what all you have going on there. The CSS you have for changing V4 things won't work though so you may as well remove that.

Your right top things that say, "Top Sites", "Sister Sites" & "Our Friends" is off the page for me in both V4 and V5. You can just stick that in your footers in V5 if you want and it should look something like this. That'll put it on the very edge of the page for all screen resolutions and not be cut off for smaller screen resolutions. I don't know what you wanted it to look like since I really can't see it so your css may need changed.

As far as the right side fixed table, I just can't get their plug in to be outside the wrapper. They gave us those headers and footers if we want to use them. You can just use the above css in your global header, change the id and change the position to left: 0px or whatever you want and then just use the div with that new id and and put your cbox in that.

No worries, I understand life.
I started adding some of the old CSS to see if some would still work but I have no idea what is still the same in v5 so I was just guessing... 

I fixed the "Top Sites", "Sister Sites" & "Our Friends" however, about the table... you are confusing me because you say the right side table however then say it won't go outside of the wrapper, so do you mean the left table? I don't want to try anything before I know what you mean.

For the left side table I want to get the avatar, quick login, and chatbox like I did in v4 and for the right peek-a-boo side bar I would want the tab to be stationary and the table to pop-out to the left like the one on v4 and not be stretched out full length... I can't change the height however for the plug-in does not give me that option.

Pretty much none of the css on V4 will work on V5. 

I did mean left side, sorry. Seems I'm doing this when I should of been asleep in bed for about 4 hours. lol

I believe you have the left side plug-in, don't you?  That was what I meant, that plug-in puts in inside the wrapper I believe. I just can't get it to work right so I suggested just putting that in your global headers, if you want.

Putting a quick login won't work since we now have the global login. However, you do know at the bottom right you'll see a gear, two windows and two people. The two people allows you to do quick switches between accounts, the next icon allows you to do quick site switches and the gear is just for your account.
The chat box you should be able to stick right in between those div tabs. Wormopolis explained how to do that here:

But there was a bit of confusion for the op so do what Wormo says to do in the forum wrapper (3rd post of wormo). And then in the side table put this:

As far as the right side you have two choices. You can go post in the plug-in board where that code is and ask for the things you want it to do. 

Or you can again, put it in your footers just like I"m suggesting you do the left side and how you did the top bit on the right.

So in your footers, you'd add some css to what you already like I did in blue: (Style it to your chosing)

You can adjust the above css (bolded) to position your cbox and toggle image and of course edit anything else. That code has memory so if you have it open it stays open until you click it closed or delete your cookies.

Okay... first off, I apologize for my idiocy... I'm just not used to v5 yet and have no idea what I am doing.

I did what you said, to my best knowledge of v5, however it still doesn't seem to be working for me... Well, the avatar did show up in the side table however I don't understand how you managed to get it out of the wrapper not using the plug-in. >_<

Edited: I copied the wrong Expand/Collapse Content code the first time, so now the right side bar is working, however, the left is my issue right now.

I'm sorry if I'm not explaining well. I am avoiding plug-in's totally for the side bar stuff since the "sidebar_redux" plug-in seems to want to put the side table where you don't want it. So going to Admin > Structure > Headers & Footers, I put this:

Okay, thank you. That made much more sense to my brain.

Now my questions about the left side table differ: How do I remove the size limit on the avatars? It's suppose to be 200x300px.

And then about the forum: How do I remove the curved edges? I prefer them square like v4.

Lastly, what this thread was made for: Have you figured out something for the hover over avatar information?
