Hey, Chris ! I was looking around for "Eton Bones" for so long, I got real confused until I realized you've had a display name switch since the last time I was active on support xD I had a feature request, I'm unsure if it's simple or complicated for you to do. If you'd prefer I request a plugin add-on in the general plugin request board instead, please let me know and I won't hesitate to do so. I figured I'd start here first, though. =) My request is a way to insert a post's word count into my template layout, maybe as a div class so I can fully customize where it goes and how it looks, so it shows up in the post list for each post recording how many words that post encompasses. If that's not clear what I'm requesting, please ask me to clarify, I'm unsure if I made any sense just now lol. I know they can add their word count into their posts of their own volition currently, but this would be a forum-wide addition so the word count shows up in every post where I want it to, as decided in the layout templates. Thank you for at the very least reading my request! =D

I believe I wrote a companion plugin once that utilized that api to keep a running tab of a user's accumulated word count and also to award monetary points based on word count multiplied by an assigned group factor. I'm also working on an update to the plugin that includes additional statistics, here is a download link if interested in helping me test it. tagging Lynx as well due to expressed interest.

Chris Thank you for the answer, I'm glad to hear this is possible! I'll be patient on whomever can add it, if anyone is up for it. =) I'm making a bug report. In a few of my threads, when I edit them with more content, their word count doesn't go up. One of my threads has 2,000 words that are unaccounted for and the one I'm currently working on is probably quite a few but it's stuck at 514. It's not sticking on the same amount or for any identifiable reason that I can discern. I know I should have more info than that but right now, it kind of seems haphazard. I can PM you a link to my forum if you need it though I know you're without a computer right now so take your time, it's not urgent by any means lol

That would be a bug. If you're referring to a count embedded within the post itself then that is one of the reason it is left up to the user to provide the pattern necessary to embed the count. There would be no way to distinguish between a number embedded into a post meant to show a count and a number left there by someone who decided to come clean and post their bank card PIN. The user is therefore REQUIRED to provide the pattern necessary to record a word count and embed it within the post evenl when editing a post snce that pattern would obviously overwrite any previous count thus removing the uncertainty.

I'm referring to the former, the counter in the posting page. Specifically I'm going by "word" rather than "characters."

I just tested editing and added as well as reduced the count with both bbcode tab set as default then visual tab and saw only what was expected so a link to the problem would help. I recall you being on an enterprise forum which could be a factor since this plugin was never tested on a forums.net forum. The other plausible explanation is if you're using an abnormally large amount of bbcode since the default processing cap is 300. If you're consistently surpassing that limit then you can raise it on the advanced tab in plugin settings.

Ohh.. I would bet that's the issue. The two threads I can think of that have this problem have quite a bit of coding in them because they're rules threads instead of a regular roleplay post. What is a safe max to set it at? Like if I do 1000, is that going to screw something up because it's so high?

I arbitrarily arrived at 300 because that was a safe limit for a very old Pentium running XP that didn't cause a "busy script" warning from an ancient Firefox browser. Although you could probably raise it to 50000 on your nitrogen cooled rig you should consider the rigs of others visiting the forum as well.

That seems to have sorted the problem right out. I went with 500 to try and compromise on either side. Thank you very much for the assistance =)

I'm anticipating some free time this weekend (finally!) ₪» ⅀ ƪ Ƒ «₪ so plan on getting to this and thanks for your patience. edit Word Count in LayoutThis plugin makes use of the interface provided by the word count plugin so cannot operate without it (e.g no quick reply then no counter exists). It looks for an element with a class of word-count-$[post.content_id] or word-count-$[message.content_id] in which to place the count but in the absence of such an element it defaults to the area around where edited by usually appears. The default type of count is "words" but that can be overridden by adding an additional class of mode-TYPE where TYPE can be on of the following: words : word count, characters : character count, sentences : sentence count, paragraphs : paragraph count, unique : unique words count, nscharacters : character count (no spaces), average_word_length : average word length, reading_level : reading level, syllables : syllable count, complex : complex word count

Thanks for the tag, Chris. I've got it downloaded, but I won't be able to get to it until Saturday or Sunday, unfortunately. I'll post back here after I do test it though.

Updated the plugin Word Count in Layout to version 0.0.2 now with the ability to activate in situations where the word count plugin is not active such as a thread where no quick reply exists or on returned search results. Note: this still requires the word count plugin since it uses methods and settings provided by that plugin and should be ABOVE that word count plugin in the managed list of plugins.
