When implemented, existing email addresses will be set to Staff only. Then people can turn it down and open it up to more people if they wish. As for notifying people I have no say in that matter. That is entirely up to VS Admin and he would need to post here with his response to that. As I said in my previous post, I don't think it's something we would do, though I completely understand your concern. I hope this has shed a little light on the email situation. Maybe a small note could be added to the settings page where email is about this, highlighting the change for a little while? While I understand the complexity of notifying users, I have never been fond of having my email visible to forum staff, and if I wasn't active here, would have no warning to change my email to a throwaway or specific address before the change was pushed out.

~Zoey~, regarding notification, v4 displayed email addresses to staff members, I don't think the average user would have any expectation that v5 would be different from this. We are setting them to the strictest privacy setting by default.

This I know. It's being able to see them before they even register. In v4, when someone registered you got to see their user email address and IP so they could be checked before even approving them.

We are setting them to the strictest privacy setting by default. VS Admin, I think ~Zoey~ and everyone else are referring to all of the numerous people who have already converted to v5. You are absolutely correct that in 3 weeks when v5 launches all of the current v4 members will have no difference in expectation regarding emails. But members have explained here and in other places that the emails they selected for use in v5 are their private emails which some specifically chose to use because they weren't known by anyone in v4. Some did so to increase their v5 security. Those people have no idea that their private emails will now switch back to being public (as much as staff is public) with no notice. I still agree with whatever decision you make regarding this notification, but I wanted to point out who was being affected since you referred to future convertees. As ~Zoey~ and Maiden were explaining, it's those that already converted, not those that will convert.

Ryan Roos thanks for the note. I still don't think sending out a notification to users would be appropriate, I think it could cause undue stress for admins if all of their members (of already upgraded forums) are receiving a PM from ProBoards. If you as a forum admin want to notify your members of the change, that is fine as well. Our Privacy Policy does state clearly that we can publish the information provided to us on the forum, so I think people are well aware of our overall policies

Still hoping for confirmation of my what is meant by staff question.... Thanks VS Admin Sounds good. Maiden Staff is how you described in your previous post. Any group that has the Staff column set to 'yes' on the Groups page in the Admin area is staff. For everyone else. If you want to explain to your members about the email situation and how to edit, here are instructions. Instructions for Changing your Email AddressThere are two ways to do so. From the Forum 1) Log into any forum. 2) In the toolbar in the very bottom right click on the gear icon. It looks like this 3) You are now on your Global Account Settings page 4) Click the link Edit on the right side of the Email row 5) Fill in the fields provided to change your email 6) Click Save Changes
From your Profile (coming soon 4/29) 1) Go to your Profile 2) Click Edit Profile 3) Go to the Personal Tab 4) Click the Edit Link under Email 5) You are now on your Global Account Settings page 6) Click the link Edit on the right side of the Email row 7) Fill in the fields provided to change your email 8) Click Save Changes
Be aware that changing your email address changes it for all of your forum accounts tied to your ProBoards Global Account.
To edit who can see your email on a forum do the following. From your Profile (coming soon 4/29) 1) Go to your Profile 2) Click Edit Profile 3) Go to the Privacy Tab 4) Find Email Visibility 5) Change the setting using the Drop Down 6) Click Save Changes
By default the setting will be set to the strictest setting, only Staff will be able to see your email address.

VS Admin, perhaps a notification to the main admin account of upgraded forums with the instructions might be something that could be done? That way the admin can decide if they are wanting to pass the information on, and avoids the direct contact from proboards to individual members.

Thanks for considering this and taking action. I need access to the email addresses to keep unwanted members out and wanted members in.

This I know. It's being able to see them before they even register. In v4, when someone registered you got to see their user email address and IP so they could be checked before even approving them. You still CAN see their IP before approving. And to me, the IP is more useful than the email when it comes right down to it. The one and ONLY thing I like email for is to be able to report to stopforumspam. Beyond that, I don't give a rip.
I don't feel we *need* to see it. People seem to be confusing need with want, IMO.

The email has nothing to do with anything really. You can make an account, with another email, but the IP won't change, unless someone really is determined, and changes it. Email is really not needed with v5, My opinion.

People also are forgetting they don't need the email (or IP) to ban the global ID.
