Several V5 questions asked by our staff

Hello

We are still using the beta version of V5 and I've asked staff to play with it and ask some questions. Here is what we have so far:


1. We currently have a feature where we can list members via the first letter of their name, just choose "A", "B", "C", etc. from a list. Didn't see that on my beta testing board, will it be available? (it was called "View by Letter" in the current version).

2. Is there a plug-in comparable to the "Insert an Image" feature we are now using (which opens up an Imageshack window, navigating to the hard drive)?  In other words, some of us keep all of our photos on our hard drive (not in Photobucket) & the Imageshack uploader allows us to that in our current version (v4).  Is that what Postimage Upload is?

3. Related - Will Proboards be hosting photos or will we still need to use Imageshack or Photobucket, etc?

4. Is there a spell-checker plug-in?

I am aware that these q's might be answered already in the existing threads, but as the time gets closer to convert & I get busier with non-forum stuff, I'll greatly appreciate having answers in my own thread. Thanks!!

1. You can change the order of the members list by clicking on each of the headings (Name, Username, etc.), so you can have members listed in alphabetical order, but I don't know that they can be listed by letter only.

2. Check out this plugin.

3. You can post an image as an attachment. There is a limit of 200mb total free, more storage available for a fee. See Admin Home > Upgrades > Manage Attachments.

4. There has been a request for a Spell-checker plugin. I don't know if it has been made yet. Most browsers have spell-checkers.

For #1, you can sort the list and still use a search term at the same time.

So if you wanted to find every member with "apple" in their display name or username and sort them alphabetically, you could just type "apple" in the search bar, then sort by display name.

I'd guess not, but you never know. In the meantime, maybe this will help some...

IE has a plugin called IESpell that can be installed. Or you can also try Speckie.

To get IESpell: IESpell download page. Follow the directions under the download links to install and use.

Firefox and Chrome have built in spellcheckers.

Thanks - the staffer who asked about spell checking said it's OK for her to use the browser one. And they're happy with the new way to "view by letter" as outlined above.

I have another question, when doing a "reply" - is there a "preview" option like we have now?

There currently is no preview option, as The visual editor is already a preview, but by popular request, there will be some kind of preview function in the future.

Will we be able to "block" Facebook and Twitter integration in V5 like we are able to in V4?

What does "enable falling" mean? It appears under "actions - moderate"?

Will we be able to show page numbers both at the top and bottom of each page as we can do now?

Is there any chance you could elaborate slightly on what Facebook and Twitter integration you mean, and how you want to block it? =]

When a thread has falling enabled, it won't be bumped to the top of the thread list if it has a new reply. Currently threads are ordered by which has the newest post - this thread will keep falling instead.

The bar with the page numbers actually follows you down the screen! Try scrolling down to the bottom, and look at the top of your screen. =]
However, if you still want a second bar, this thread shows how you can add one.

Thank you - we have disabled FB and Twitter logins on our current site (when the feature was added, we obtained code to take it out) and would like to do the same thing in V5. If you look at our login page you won't see "Login with your social network or forum account" but rather just the "keep me logged in" choice with a box to check. We'd like to do that in V5 as well, if you allow it.

The staff has a few more questions:

1. Does the universal login now mean that people are using one password for all Proboards forums? (I"m assuming that is the case)

2. How is the global login affected if people have different user names on different forums?

3. In the members' profiles, can we add fields like "date joined" and "location"?

5. Someone discovered what looks like code changes, she posted this:

I can see that some of the BBCode has been updated and slightly changed in v5, is that correct? She's looking at image code and centering.

If that is correct, it looks like it will impact how we post? And how our old posts will display? Can someone explain? (if I'm making any sense)

6. Will the forum be placed in maintenance mode (with a message to the members) during the actual conversion?

7. Is it POSSIBLE for us to request a certain date to do the conversion? I will be out of the country for the first 3 weeks of May and would greatly appreciate my forum being converted AFTER that.

This is what it means, yes. =]

They can link all their forum accounts to their global account, so they can access them all through one email address or username.

This is easily doable. I'd show you how but I'm currently on my phone. =P

There has been alterations to the bbcode system, yes. While the old system will still work, the new style imitates html, giving you more control. Again, I'm sure someone can link you to a better guide if you'd like one. =]

6. Will the forum be placed in maintenance mode (with a message to the members) during the actual conversion?
There will be a temporary message (similar to MM) during the conversion, but the actual upgrade is very fast, so is be surprised if anyone actually sees it. =P
