Hello there, Though I love v5 intensely, I miss the simplicity of the calendar. I don't like having to attach every event to a thread. I would just like the old calendar back where I just click the "Calendar" button and I'm able to add an event and description without having to choose a board or go through 50 hurtles to just pot a reminder that a class starts. Especially when I have to add 10-20 events at a time, I would like the old method to make that go more smoothly. I'm not really sure what else to add here, but I thank anyone willing to help me with this

Space wouldnt be unlimited.. you would have to actually do some housekeeping and delete older stuff. there is a limit to the amount of storage.

what I have so far...
you can add static events in the plugin setting itself for one-time or re-occuring events. these never get deleted because they have to manually be deleted by whoever has plugin access. it shows those events on the monthly view as events for each day, including multiple days if you set the span to more then 1 day. hovering the title will display its description (truncated if too long) if you click a day view, it lists each event and its description (full) the mini-calendars on the right will bold on days with events and hover will show that event listed as a pro-tip (like normal events do) you can optionally also have it list events in the info center in a new section above users online
what I dont have yet... making it where permission granted members can add events to the calendar that are stored in the super forum key. if re-occuring is left unchecked, you can have it do housekeeping on events older then a number of days you specify. I plan to hijack the "Create Event" button in the top left because you can do the normal event create on the days themselves already. I am not sure if I can hijack the days themselves because I need to open my own dialog and Im not sure yet if it will prevent the normal one from opening, or if its cancelled will it open default. if I can figure that out, I can move the call onto the days. otherwise its on the button only. clicking the button will open a dialog with all the setup options for an event like in the plugin settings. once stored in the key, it gets treated like the static events in the plugin settings.
I have to use a super forum key in order for everyone to be able to access the data. there is no way around it. especially if you want members or staff to add events.

Well... Wow that's a lot. I pretty much just miss being able to just click "New Event" and posting the event on the calendar. Bringing threads into it has made it all the more difficult for me to understand, and no matter how long I tinker with it, I just can't get it.

Well it needed somewhere to store the data I guess. If you look at it from another angle, lets say you had a huge event that required a lot of details to. You can't fit all of that into a little box. So now you get a dedicated thread for it.
The plugin however doesn't make any threads. And you don't get unlimited space to make a description. The key holds 32000 characters, so if you average 200 characters per event (including title, description, and date) you can store 160 events before it declares itself full. If you have housekeeping turned on, it will auto delete any past event after so many days.
There won't be any fancy titles with this either. No posting the intricate templates that are in posts into a calendar box. The title is stored as text only.

That actually is perfect. The only thing I want to use it for is when classes are going to be held. So it's like if you're looking at it, you see "Potions" in the February 3rd box. You click it, and the description is just what they will be studying; "Boomslang skin properties"
I'm fairly good at keeping up with "housekeeping", so I'd keep up on deleting the expired ones.

You wouldn't even need to manually delete really. As soon as you went to add anything new it would delete the old. I probably need to attach a click with delete option on those events.

I have key stored events now working and all re-occuring events will show on any year. its also now auto-deleting any event that has expired, but I need to put back in the "allowed to still exist" days part. if you click an event in the calendar, it takes you to the day view where you see the event and full description.
still to go: ability to delete/modify an existing key saved event by staff (and optionally the person who created it if not staff).
Its looking pretty good though. you can set the color of the event so in your case if you have different classes, each class could have its own color on the calendar.
possible future option: ability to choose an icon image on the day view. right now it defaults to the same image (that is set in the plugin settings). that way you could have different icons between different kinds of events. the info center also has an image that is set in the plugin settings.

I might make a LITE version that doesnt use a super key, but also means all events have to be stored in th plugin settings itself

Yes :)I'm going through it now. I have noticed that all of the ones I can post right now are set to static, not to expire. Is that normal?
