.....the Extended Tread Titles plugin sounds appealing, but would like to see some description of it before installing it. Does that exist?
Hmmm... Try this..
Do you have trouble thinking of an adequate title for your threads in the space allowed?.. Is 60 characters just not enough to have that concise description you crave?
The Extended Thread Titles plugin will allow you to use titles of up to 4000, that's right, FOUR THOUSAND characters.
Why use a two or three word title when a whole paragraph will do? Install the Extended Thread Titles plugin and have all the space you could ever want. Enhance the look of your forum with looooong thread titles.. Describe your thread in exceptional detail using up to 4000 characters. Install the Extended Thread Titles plugin to give you the freedom to do just that.
Get the Extended Thread Titles plugin today.. It's FREE.
LOL! Tongue firmly in cheek I'd say! So, I guess my only question is can we specify the maximum length, or are we stuck with 4000?

I went ahead and installed it and learned that I can specify the title length limit; perfect! I did notice that the height of the title input box has changed; it looks to be two characters tall. Can that be fixed so it looks no different from the original?
Also, if the length is set to, say, 80, then reduced to 72, then set back to 80, will any long titles remain truncated? I guess what I am really asking is how does it actually work; where are the extra characters stored and how is that space managed?

Yes, tongue was firmly in cheek .
The longer thread titles are held in a key, so any titles that have been set if you decide to reduce the available space will remain at their full length. If you decide to remove the plugin, those thread titles that are over-sized will then be truncated to the 60 character limit.
And to reduce the title field back to one charecter high, put this at the bottom of your CSS Stylesheet..
#new_thread_title { height: 1.3em; }

After I install it, and create a thread and try to post it, I get an error message in the title box telling me I "I must create a title"...even though I have.
*EDIT*
I installed it on a freeforums.net forum...is that the reason it doesn't work for me? It confirms it has installed correctly...so I don't know why it won't work for me. The box doubles in size, so it appears to be having an effect.

The plugin works on all of our domains (proboards.com, freeforums.net, boards, net, forums.net) The error messages we have are "You must provide a subject" (when a title is missing), or "You must provide a message" (when there is no post content). Is it possible you tested without adding a post message? I can help you troubleshoot why the plugin is not working for you, however I see you've deleted it from the forum. If you wish to reinstall it, I can take a look.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for this late response (I just noticed it).
I got it working. I noticed the default setting was 200 characters and the box was blank, so I inserted 200 in the box this time and saved it, and it works now! I don't know if that was the problem or not, but everything is great now.
Thanks again.
