Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher who lived from 4 BC – 65 AD. What this quote means is that one who makes choices based largely on logical reasoning will conclude that being a virtuous person benefits one's own life immensely, because of the positive quantifiable karma it affords. One who is constantly telling more and more lies in attempt to dig their way out of the figurative hole they've dug for themselves would do better to cease their iniquity and instead turn to virtue as a solution. Telling oneself things such as "One more lie and I can get out of this mess." is subjecting oneself to gambler's fallacy, as the cards that fate draws are so random that one cannot count the cards within its deck.
