Lynx, Hard to say to be honest. I haven't tried it, nor could find decent reviews on it. There are so many free editors out there, I'd suggest installing a few of them and see how they feel to you. It mostly comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. atom.iowww.sublimetext.comnotepad-plus-plus.orgbrackets.iowww.aptana.comThat's just a few that I remember, some I've tried. There are more, I just don't remember them.

Okay. Thanks, Peter! I do have Notepad++ - I just wasn't sure if the one I linked would be better or not.

Lynx , It depends how much time you are going to devote learning the software. Just like with any software there is a learning curve. If you want to build large scale applications on top of build tools, then yes the software might be good. If however you just want to build proboard plugin/themes, then no I wouldn't waste my time with it. The browser offers alot of debugging tools(console/breakpoints) built in and you can test your code as it unfolds before you. Building proboard plugin/themes locally is a challenge for anyone. I use build tools(node/gulp/livereload) in my day to day work life and on a plugin I am working on github.com/philip82/proboards_lottery, however copy/pasting it into proboard's plugin dashboard is very time consuming. I don't like to write code in the plugin dashboard personally, but it might be the best option for you. If you use notepad++ then I'd say stick to it. Its lightweight and fast, unlike some other bloated IDE's

I've heard of Code Pen, but never used it. Is it free (fixed income here)?

They have a FREE plan yes. I'm not 100% sure of the details, so you would need to check it out.

Lynx, Which did you settle on in the end? I tested out the Visual Studio Code, didn't really care for it. I'm constantly switching between projects, but for someone starting out it seems Ok.

Peter, Notepad++. Visual Studio Code wouldn't even install on my 64-bit machine. Not sure if I grabbed the wrong installer for it or what, but not going worry about it now. Notepad++ does what I need.
