And support typically responds with "you should post in the support thread as the author is best suited to help you". I don't know - maybe I'm misinterpreting that? Staff aren't really expected to memorize which threads do and do not have a support thread for them, so of course that will be an expected response from them. There's one simple way to stop this happening, be clear in your opening post stating something a long the lines of " I need support with this plugin, but there is no support thread for it in the plugins board". It's not exactly tough, and it takes a mere few seconds to type out.

It's not exactly tough, and it takes a mere few seconds to type out. We have people who still post in support with questions regarding template mods and know that they should have posted in the templates board. There's people who probably haven't read the Help Guide or even the rules before posting a support question. Given that, I'm not inclined to believe that they even took the time to look for a support thread, let alone ask them to type out a few extra words in their support board post that they couldn't find one - of course they're not going to find one if they don't look. You know what, nevermind. I'll just assume that those who don't make support threads just really don't care about the end user. That ought to be quite interesting when V6 rolls out and their are paid themes and plugins. "Oh, you just spent $5 for that? Eh, don't look for a support thread because one was never made. The author has decided to just take the money and run and give no support." Exaggerated? Maybe. Then again, maybe not. Just let me point one thing out: I've probably got the crappiest, most easily coded plugins out there. One of them has absolutely no posts other than the OP post I did in its support thread - but the thread is there, and none of my plugins probably need a support thread because they are so simple to use. That's because I care about making sure that there is a place for people to go if they've got questions about one of my plugins. To me, those without support threads just don't care. However, I'll just stop here, because we both know a debate for both sides could probably continue indefinitely.

However, I'll just stop here, because we both know a debate for both sides could probably continue indefinitely. For paid plugins and themes I do agree, there should be support threads for each one. However, it's impossible to force people to give their help Though what can be done and is the best all round solution, is as someone mentioned previously (Tim I think - not sure) regarding trusted authors. If you were going to purchase something, anything, what do you always do first? You research it, be it the stats to fit your needs or the reviews/comments ( actual proper ones, not just stupid ones you see on themes and plugins (especially those with a star rating but no actual comment). You'd easily be able to see and determine if you want to spend your money. " oh look, no support thread - I am not going to purchase / bad reviews because the author doesn't update/fix issues - avoid". By not buying someones theme or plugin you could probably make them (so to speak) offer a support thread. No author wants 0 downloads/installs - it defeats the purpose of them putting something up for sale. So by nobody buying their stuff, could make them re-evaluate having one and offering support. Whether you agree or disagree with me, for anyone that doesn't look into stuff ( such as the previous) before parting ways with their money, that's on their heads, is their fault and they have nothing & nobody to blame but themselves.
I do think it was previously stated by someone to have a trial or refund period for any/all purchased themes/plugins, which I think could possibly work. I doubt the authors will be paid instantly as soon as they have a download/install, so I would assume it'd be a weekly think. So if someone cancels within that week, they are not charged for it.

are we nearly there yet ? The more people ask the longer it takes - they put back when they announce it and its release by a year

this is correct :) we could do with a count down date, like an advent calendar with chocolates ha ha !! The point I was trying to make though is that there is no estimated release date right now so it doesn't matter how many times you ask.
