I agree, Matt .
We're general talk as well, and going strong for more than seven years.
I don' t think any type of forum is right or wrong. It just needs to be the right fit for the admin who creates it and his/her target audience.
I once said that a forum is alive as long as the admin continues maintaining it and posting on it. There so many forums that get deleted. There are different reasons for a forum's death.

I once said that a forum is alive as long as the admin continues maintaining it and posting on it. There so many forums that get deleted. There are different reasons for a forum's death. This is roughly accurate. A forum doesn't die completely until the manager stops getting whatever it is they want out of it. Otherwise, they can keep going, as can any other Admins who are also interested in this. Otherwise, they will keep it going. On a dead forum, they can stay or leave, but have few other options and hence staying will not seem worthwhile. As such, it will tend to gradually dissipate. In general, a one-topic forum need not die easily. It can die, but it's less easy for members to do this except by just leaving straight off, which is generally less likely to happen. Their posts are kept in a certain direction or tendency which prevents them from posting differently now that the board is 'dying,' and hence gives it the chance of recovery. Generally, you want users to have a recognised identity quickly on the forum, and then be able to post on it - not just to be constantly trying to inform people that they exist. However, if you have a forum which isn't about a single topic, you want to avoid any emergence of people starting threads on personal topics or about the situation of the forum at the expense of the topic to be discussed. This implies an attempt to decentre the forum, which can get in the way of recovery attempts because members are ambiguous about what is to be recovered, and injecting some momentum into the board requires a clear direction.
