Forum Discussion/Activity (Current Members)

I've been a member of quite a few forums. I just want to see some ideas you guys have about increasing participation/activity and discussion on your boards, particularly the boards that don't seem to get as much traffic as others. How do you encourage members to become more active in those boards and others? Like it says in the title, this is encouraging traffic from current members, not necessarily visitors.

I'm trying to look into this myself. My forum is still fairly new. I created it Jan 2015, took a long break a few months after because Life, and have resurrected it. I'm back to the old ways of promoting my site (Twitter and YouTube comments), which brings 50 or more guest views every 24 hours. My issue is getting members to join and getting the ones I already have more active. I have two ghost accounts and one moderator.
