Ha. I didn't even realize PBS was blacklisted - I swore I had whitelisted it. (At least that's fixed now.)
Can we make sure that hitting `esc` will close the overlay? That's about my only ask.

Fair enough. I use AdBlock on every site for the primary concern of being tracked Just being on the internet means you are tracked, on here the admins can see what pages you visit etc. There was one popular site that provided users with a signature image, that image was tracked, we didn't know what they did with the info they collected, so that is now banned here. Ad services track what you do so they can target relevant ads in your direction.

Unfortunately I don't think we're going to do this. We want users to make a conscious click, we hope this will help with people disabling their ad-blockers.

The same thing can be said for those who jump in to browbeat those who voice their opinions. Because sometimes when I'm on my break at work, I use that computer. I have absolutely no control over their ad blocker and its settings, as they are grayed out and only adjustable with admin access. So, yeah, that's why I care. Hi wildmaven , You will not receive the message on a posting page, so it will not interfere with your ability to use the forum. The message will appear once an hour (or once a session, whichever comes first) and will require only a single click to dismiss. The message should in no way affect your ability to use the forum completely normally aside from that singular click once an hour, or once per a session. Thanks, Michael!

A real world example: Justin TV (JTV) started up, it's a livestreaming service, at first the ads were not annoying, just a few banner ads, people used adblocker, their revenue went down, so JTV started using fullscreen in-video ads, more people complained then heard about adblocker, JTV's revenue went down even more, finally JTV couldn't maintain the free service and are now closed. (this is how i heard the story) That would be a really good example if it were true. Justin.tv "closed" by pivoting their focus to video game streaming, rebranding as Twitch, and is now one of the largest content services out there (by traffic volume) with an estimated worth north of a billion of dollars. As to whether blocked ads played a role in the company's decision to discontinue allowing general streaming, I don't know, but painting it as something that was forced to completely close up shop is disingenuous when they just opted to chase the money and focus on their most profitable segment. We would all be so lucky to fail that hard. While your example doesn't really work as intended, it does serve as a lesson to the broader ProBoards userbase, many of whom make the mistake of trying to create general forums and expect that having dozens of boards to discuss everything under the sun will lead to success. Twitch shows that success is found by narrowing your focus and catering to a niche market with little or no competition. "Do one thing and do it well," as the saying goes.

Ad services track what you do so they can target relevant ads in your direction. That's very true. Part of my job is to implement that type of tracking! Knowing first hand how much of it is going on, specifically for advertisement purposes, is why I dislike it. People might not be so quick to use some services if they knew how much data was being collected on them, although a lot of it is anonymous (barring social media). So I block what I can through the use of an VPN, ad blockers, and by disabling cookies and JavaScript wherever possible.

I didn't realize this ~ and find it a bit intrusive. .

I didn't realize this ~ and find it a bit intrusive. . This is a bit of a puzzler to me as well; ProBoards has always prided itself on preventing people from seeing the exact page you're on, and as an admin on other sites I know that it's impossible to look at natively with PB software (a third party script, such as a statcounter, would be able to track the URLs visited, but obv this is not a default option with PB).
If the reds can see this information I just have to ask what the purpose is, since it goes against ProBoards' known stance on privacy.

I guess it's for analytics and statiticts. (Remember that v6 announcement and they said how low pageviews the calendar got? I guess it's for those things.)

No, tracking members on exact pages isn't necessary for that purpose.
That type of tracking really intrudes on our privacy.
As Kami pointed out, "ProBoards has always prided itself on preventing people from seeing the exact page you're on".
And per my question, do they only track our page "footprints" here on Support or does that extend to our personal forums, as well? I know, as admins, we can't track our members on our forums, but does this particular technology extend beyond Support for ProBoards' admins to our individual forums, as well?

I guess it's for analytics and statiticts. (Remember that v6 announcement and they said how low pageviews the calendar got? I guess it's for those things.) Pageviews is not the same thing as tracking information / seeing who is on what page. It's entirely possible to track the # of visitors to a webpage without revealing their identities. For example, at my job we use something called bitgravity and we can see the # of people viewing a page at any given time, as well as a general country of origin for their IP, but we cannot see who is accessing what at that specific moment. The analytics page simply counts how many people are there at a specific time, but not who.
