Hello I was reading up on SEO and gaining some traffic to my forum with new sign ups. A lot of what i read was stating using meta tags in posts. Could someone explain that to me because i have no idea what is. I await your responses.

This post is written with the assumption that you've already read the Help Guide Article on Understanding SEO (and if you haven't, I advise reading it). I do not know where you are reading that you need to use meta tags in posts, because: 1. Meta tags are obsolete. As the Help Guide article states, many search engines now put less (if any) stock into meta tags, and because of the ability to abuse meta tags you can actively get penalised by some engines (such as bing). 2. Meta tags belong between the <head></head> tags in your website's HTML, so it's not possible to put them within the body of a post.

Admin > Structure > Layout Templates > Forum wrapper.
They go between the <head></head> tags.
But I highly advise you not to do this for the reasons stated above. Meta tags are counter productive to your goals to increase your SEO ranking.

For the third time: meta tags are counter productive to your goals of increasing your SEO ranking.
More simply put: meta tags will not help you much (if at all), and depending on the search engine can hurt your SEO ranking.
I will not be repeating this information for a fourth time. The link I gave you to the help guide article on SEO explains the problem with meta tags fully. If you do not understand it, then I lack the ability to help you further.
As for the rest, this is not a technical support section, so make your inquiries in the Support board, please.

The Most important META tag you can use on your blog/forum/site is the Description tag, and the reason it is the most important tag, has nothing to do with SEO, at least not regarding the algorithm.
The reason it is the most important tag(outside of charset, viewport etc), is because it describe's your page/thread to the user. So it is used for the benefit of the user(UX), the same could be said for micro data schema's. They don't add any value for SEO but they do help catalogue your site for the user.
The first 150+ characters of your thread is used instead of a meta description tag. unless you add any paragraphs above.
