I hope this is the correct place to share this post.
As someone who knows next to nothing about tech stuff, Proboards seemed like too much of a challenge for me. A few weeks have gone by and I have experimented with the plugs ins. When I couldn't get something to work I came here and spent ages digging through threads. This forum is so helpful and supportive! I haven't had to ask one question yet!
Anything I wanted to know about has already got multiple threads dedicated to it, with people sharing the codes I needed to move things around and to get stuff to work. I feel like this has been an amazing educational experience for me and I am so grateful to all the members that take the time to help out clueless people like me.
I will be making sure to rate and review all the plug ins I have used once my forum is complete and you other newbs should too. The more feedback we give the more awesome stuff we get!
In the meantime just in case any other newbs are a bit lost on where to start, I thought I'd list a few plugs ins that are easy af to install and set up. These make your forum so much better, more user friendly, and interactive. These ones are mainly for the set up of your board. There are heaps of other cool plug ins to explore once you're good to go, but when you're in building phase you'll want these.
V4 News Fader
This makes your news appear in a container above your forum. It stands out a lot better and it matches up with whatever gradients/colours you've got on your other title bars. It resizes automatically to fit your forum if you've got side bars. If you make your news feed dynamic and link it to a board it will show recent threads from that particular board inside the container. This is handy if you post your news into its own board or if you run comps on a specific board etc.
Dynamically Tabbed Table
This gives you a table/container with tabs that you can switch between at the top of your forum. A really nifty place to put something like newsfeeds social media feeds, member status updates, community rules and guidelines, about us and contact us information, affiliate banners etc. So many uses for this. Handy little plug in to have.
Container Plug In
This places a container at the footer of your forum. You could use it to display products from an online store, or the other forums you're affiliated with, or information about your community, widgets, banners, an embedded chat room, or twitter feed, anything you can think of really.
Sidebar Redux
I find if I use this to display my recently updated threads I don't seem to have any problems with the threads shifting the forum to the side or anything weird like that. I've seen other people complain about the recently updated threads plug in. Just use it in conjuction with this and you won't have any issues with resizing or offsetting etc. It's also a great place for newsfeeds and status updates or a place to list your forum rules. Many many uses for this plug in.
Recently Updated Threads
Excellent plug in to make your forum more interactive. Very easy to use with the sidebar redux plug in. If you get familiar with div codes you can move the recent threads out of the side bar and into any container plug in you've added like the dynamically tabbed table or the footer container, but if that's too difficult just putting them to the side of your forum is awesome enough. Requires a super key.
Recent Status Tracking
Display your members status updates on your home page either in the sidebar or one of the other containers you've installed. This gives your forum a real community feel and allows members to make their own public announcements. Requires a super key.
There are many other great plug ins and I'd be here all day if I talked about all of them. Hope this helps any newbs just starting out! Also feel free to share the plug ins or handy codes you've just discovered you can't live without.
