Our cats have always been free to roam and once we moved in to the new place they did well at keeping the rat, mouse and rabbit population in check, which are all pests here. Had a half siamese that reached 20, before kidney failure ended his days.

While I agree that tamed cats do best indoors, this country has a very large feral problem which is what I addressed in my post. We can either ignore that problem, kill that problem, or TNR that problem ~ which has greatly lessened the number of ferals. I advocate and practice TNR and have seen the positive results first hand.
And I'm very grateful to live in a state and a city that not only endorses this humane solution, they encourage it, as do the local shelters. When ferals are captured and brought to the shelter, they are no longer killed by our shelters (since they have no chance of being adopted because there are so many tame cats there needing homes), they spay/neuter the cat at no charge and release them into the loving care of colony carekeepers.

Thanks for the hint about the lemon pepper. I'm going to give it a try, it can't hurt and maybe I'll save my furniture. I have to admit to occasionally raising my voice to my cats and having stare down contests -they really do know who is the head of their pride! And that would be me. Cats hate lemon pepper, if you can't find any in your supermarket then create your own, cats hate lemon, pepper, and garlic.
I once had a kitten who insisted on using my furniture for a scratching post and I tried everything under the sun, and I'm not about traumatizing my pets so I don't abuse them in anyway physically and verbally so, I had some lemon pepper that was never being used to I rubbed it on my couch where he would scratch at, just watching him squint was and back away was too adorable but, after a couple of days he got the hint and never did it again.
It didn't mark up the couch with stains or anything and the scent stayed there for about a month maybe.

Think it depends lot on where you live and the cats. I have two, one is female, neutered and always stays close to home, never leaving the garden and never has hunted or brought anything dead in.
The other is male, neutered but as soon as was old enough was wanting to go outside, even before got vaccinations he was trying to get out and would attack our other cat as he was bored. He is a hunter too and has killed birds, mostly pigeons. Cats are hard to judge as they can live indoors but they do need lot space to walk, there territory is large. If you keep them in need to entertain them for sure.

If you keep them in need to entertain them for sure. And therein lies the key. So many people get rid of their cats because of behavioral issues that result from cat boredom. A lot of people don't realize that getting a cat (or other animal) takes DAILY dedication, not just feeding them and cleaning up after them.

4:30 this morning, I was woken up by cats fighting outside my bedroom window. This is why my cat isn't allowed outside. I really wish people would use their brains and keep their cats indoors at night. It's safer for both the cats and the local wildlife. As much as I want to stress to keep your cat in all the time, I agree that one needs to keep them in during the nighttime the most! I doubt that these cats that were fighting were spayed, but you never know.

That's why, when our sweet Dora passed, we had to get another dog to be a pal for DarbyQ because he was going nuts without a companion during the day when we were at work.

I also believe that all pets should have a like companion, or two, or three.
As far as cats fighting during the night, they were most likely ferals. Shame on anyone who let's unspayed or unneutered pets outdoors to contribute to an already overburdened homeless cat population. And usually fights are just that, intact males fighting over territory and female cats in heat.
