Sometimes I have suspicious activity on long time members accounts. Every now and then it turns out to be a legit compromised account (like a stolen mobile) and I need to shut it down. Most times things are fine and there are no worries but this got me thinking.
It would be nice to be able to semi-disable an account from doing anything other then PMing staff and/or posting in the shout box with still allowing them to log in of course. This would provide a way for me to keep a fishy account from doing any harm if things are looking suspicious but at the same time, just in case, give the member a way to communicate with me directly if it's not a compromised account.
I looked all over the support site and didn't find anything like this so if it already exists I am sorry!

Willow, One option you could do, but it does require some setup on your part, is to use Member Groups. You can then use this group to prohibit certain things on your forum. 1) Go to Admin > Members > Member Groups2) Create a new group that has no powers (Staff and Global should also be No) and make it a Hidden group (this is important so they can't just leave the group) 3) For boards, edit the board(s) to be affected and add this group into the Except members in the groups section. If you place this in the Who can View option, this will prevent them from seeing the board at all. If you still want them to be able to read threads, put this group in the Who can create threads and Who can reply options. Now, when you need to put an account on a "semi-ban", just add that account to the group.

Aye I was thinking of that and its then easy enough to remove them as well. Thanks!

It's not exactly what I wanted but it will work and is a good solution.

It is a good suggestion actually, allowing disabled accounts to still be able to PM staff. Wouldn't go as far as allowing them to post in the shout box, but can see why being able to PM staff would be advantageous.
I would mark this as a suggestion.
