Wait, that's not right. James is serious on Jeopardy! So far, James Holzhauer's five-day total is almost $300k including the record shattering $110k win on Tuesday. Move over Ken Jennings ...

We've been watching. His technique is totally throwing off the other opponents. Usually contestants ease into the categories, learning their quirks, by starting with the lowest scoring question, which is the easiest, but he begins with the highest scoring questions and by the time the others can catch up, he's already scored all of the high points. He's also daring by going "all in" when it comes to the Double Jeopardy questions, something most contestants don't do.
Now, if he could only get rid of that cheesy smile, haha.

If you were winning $100k for being smart you'd have the same smile I'm not faulting him being happy. His smile, though, is a weird forced-looking smile you see from the used car salesmen on TV ads. I'm not talking about the smile shown above, but the full-teeth smile. It doesn't look genuine. Once in a while, he gets caught off guard by something and you see his real smile, which isn't that rehearsed type of smile he uses at other times, and it's much more pleasant.

wildmaven, I've watched Jeopardy on and off through the years and his approach is not unique. Though from what I recall from the ones I've seen, the brazen tend to crash and burn. Guess seeing a big winner would be exciting, though I often liked the even matched so you have no idea who will win until final Jeopardy. A runaway isn't all that fun to watch - for me at least. Haven't see his episodes, but totally get what you mean about the smile. I know a couple people whose "pose" smile seems fake compared to their natural smile. Nice people, just guessing they're overthinking the 'must look happy' part.

That's why I love candid photography better, as the person is being natural, not forced. I agree about the closer games being more fun. I feel badly for those up against James. The lady yesterday gave him a run at first, but then he hit one of the Daily Doubles and it was over after that.

Yeah, he’s not the first to use that technique. Arthur Chu (also not the first) did something similar and people got upset with him and accused him of not playing fairly, but I don’t see what the big deal is. I think some people forget that Jeopardy is a game of strategy as well as one of knowledge/trivia. You’re allowed to jump around the board precisely to outmaneuver other contestants. Most contestants don’t do this and play the game sequentially, creating a public perception that this is how the game is supposed to be played, but the contestants who break out of that pattern are the ones who achieve name recognition.

I wasn’t suggesting you did think the game was supposed to be played that way. I was addressing the backlash against Chu.

Generally speaking the top of the board (lower $ amount) answers (or is it "questions" ? ) are easier and gives the contestant the gist of how the category responses should be. So it does make sense to start off that way.

I watched it today (his sixth day) and it was close. He briefly lost the lead to one contestant and would have lost it all if he had wagered a bit more during Final Jeopardy. I don’t know how calculated his bet was, but he must not have been very confident in his answer.
(I too thought it was Madonna, but I knew 1982 seemed a bit too early for her and the video cassette aspect threw me for a loop since I knew her fame was propelled by being an early star of MTV’s music videos, and I didn’t think MTV was around in ‘82. I never even considered Jane Fonda.)
Regarding his smile: in motion I could see that he appears to have an underbite, which I think might account for its forced appearance. The underbite makes it look like he’s clenching his jaw when he gives a big smile.
I say ^this as someone who also has a terrible smile. I don’t have an underbite, but I can’t pull off a sincere smile for anything. I could as a young kid, but as time went on I began to look like I’m giving a forced smile. I basically just smirk now.

UPDATE:On Friday, his win was worth $89,158 (second highest all-time daily total). His seven day total is $415,035 (placing him fourth on the list of total earnings) His average daily winnings is currently at $59,290 Since this is a 1/2 hour show, that's the equivalent of an hourly wage of $118,580/hour.
In contrast, Ken Jennings has won over 6 times as much money in non-tournament play: $2,522,700 but that was in over 10 times as many games (75).
Ken's average daily winnings in non-tournament play was $33,636. Still, not too shabby.
