On a forum that I am on, there was a discussion at one point about requiring approval before being able to post. Ultimately, the discussion went to having approval only to gain access to certain areas of the forum. This was so to prevent someone from joining up, and just immediately causing trouble in the sections that approval was needed.

A lot of the boards I've joined in the past haven't required admin approval, but there have been some that have and usually I'm not waiting too long. But I have recently registered on a new board and it does require admin approval. I'm currently waiting for approval, I think if I haven't heard back in a week I'll probably give up.
Currently my board doesn't have a restricted access, but it might later on if required, for now though I'll just wait and see and see how things go.

Generally, no. Unless you're getting a lot of spam accounts or you're trying to be selective, I don't think it's a good idea. I've had to do that before, though, because my site was huge at the time, and we needed to do this to make sure that they weren't spam accounts because we were getting a lot of them.

I personally don't use Admin Approval, and I don't support it either. Doing this can discourage new members. Another problem is that the person may never be accepted, because the admin might never come back. Unless there is a spam wave, then I won't ever use it.

I have only ever joined one forum where it took the admin about a year to approve me. The reason was that the admin suddenly disappeared from the forum, and then - when she came back - had it in Maintenance Mode. I sent her a PM on here, and finally she decided to reopen her forum, and I was allowed in. LOL Mind you, it's now back in Maintenance Mode, which is a shame. It was a great forum.
Anyway... I am thinking that if a forum has knows troublemakers joining them, then perhaps the admin can use Admin Approval while they are away from the forum, like when they go off for the night, and deactivate it again during the day, when they pop into their forum from time to time.
The thing with Admin Approval is that you don't know who that person is who wants to join you. Even a known troublemaker can change their name and email address. Therefore I would only use the Admin Approval when I was done for the day and close down my computer.

Does a request have to be for a proboard forum? I'm pretty sure most up to date forum softwares have admin/mod approval available to them in some form. Though I highly doubt most forum admins know of the feature; and if they do, I doubt many will enable the feature if they have anti-spam measures already in place to stop bot type or spammy users from getting in.
