Forum URL: railvillage.proboards.com/I have a feeling the answer will be no, but anyway on my forum I am following 6 people, but only 4 are visible on the user profile. Is there any way to change to, so they all show up. Reason I ask is because I moved the Following and Followers boxes to the bottom of the user profile, so thought it would be better if they all showed up.

For anyone wondering just what I have done. The following should make it a bit more clear.

It looks like the variable only contains 4, so it wouldn't be possible to display them all, or more. Which is unfortunate.

Just a note, the "following" and "friends" system was never really developed and has very little (if any) functional use. It is highly unlikely that this system will continue into the future.

That's a shame. I was hoping it would be expanded in V6 to improve functionality. Keep in mind that many people use the 'friends' system to keep track of people they regularly PM with the same way an address book functions with emails. It's also a convenient way to check if people you want to privately converse with are online without having to navigate to individual profiles. You can even sort the members list by 'friends' from a link in the profile. Take that away natively and you are going to have a bunch of people demanding a plugin just to add that functionality back.

If you start typing a name in the recipient field it will automatically search the members of the forum. You can also use the "users online" in the Info and Statistics section to see who's online. All of the things you mentioned have other (more commonly used) functionality elsewhere and any truly useful functionality will (very likely) still exist elsewhere.

All of the things you mentioned have other (more commonly used) functionality elsewhere and any truly useful functionality will (very likely) still exist elsewhere. I'm well aware. That works very well for small forums with few members. Or group messages with two or three people. Or members who talk regularly. The more people have to hunt for something, or click through multiple pages, or keep searching for members and hoping they remember the 'name' of their new friend they just made or the one they haven't talked to in awhile...the less likely they are to do it. There are people who can't even remember their own 'name' from forum to forum. People can change their display name, change their avatar, often don't even know another member's 'username' unless it's also the 'display' name. If you don't have something... immutable... nailed down somewhere, people are going to lose track of each other. One of the great things that makes forums different that a lot of other social media is the sense of community. I've been on all kinds of messages boards for many years, and I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't have some kind of 'friends' system. It allows for and facilitates a more personal connection with individual members. There are boards I now rarely post on that I still log in to check on and converse with my friends that post there. Maybe simplify the 'friends' system, but please don't completely abolish it.
