I think it's kind of interesting to be able to use the term "Roaring Twenties" as they did in the last century.

However, I understand that there is some debate as to when the new decade actually starts... when do you think the new decade starts, the year 20 or 21?

Yeah it was originally titled simply Welcome to the Roaring Twenties and it would have  be easy to overlook or misunderstand the title. It's kind of cozy to be combined though, don't you think?

Are you me? I was thinking about this exact same thing on the bus a few minutes ago. I was trying to remember what happened in the 1920s so I could think of things that might recur in the 2020s, but the only historical event that popped into my head was the Great Depression.

That's a debate which is not easily resolved. So we rely on convention.

By definition, a 'decade' is ten consecutive years. It doesn't matter on which year it begins or even on which day of the year.

But we like to think in nice, tidy patterns so we tend to name our 'official' decades beginning on January 1.

It's convenient to conceive of the start of a decade as when the 'tens digit' changes.
By this convention, 2010~2019 was the previous decade, 2020~2029 is the current decade.

But ...

What was the very first decade on our calendar?
It should be the years 0~10.
But does our calendar have a year 0?
An absolutist might argue that the calendar starts on year 1.
Therefore, our first decade would be nine years if spanned years 1~9.
We can't tolerate that! By definition, a decade must be ten years.
So they would insist that all decades which follow must begin with a 1 for the 'ones-digit'.

As for me, I can't be arsed bothered to worry about it one way or the other. If someone choose to ascribe to the 'tens-digit' convention and say the decade of the 2020's has just begun, I'm totally okay with that.
