Very good news, thank you for your work on this and for thinking through how to support custom domains. Will you be contacting us when you are ready to convert a custom domain to SSL? You can always try out the Experiment mentioned in my post above! Will this affect at the forum by negative ?

You can always try out the Experiment mentioned in my post above! I've just turned on force https in the experimental section. The certificate is there and so far it all seems good. I've alerted the other mods to keep an eye out for strange behaviour. theaudiostandard.net

This is bittersweet news, of course I love the transition to https and I understand the need to increase the price for custom domains. However, with the ever increasing domain prices and now this hike, I have decided to revert back to the default PB URL. I hope you don't mind me asking here, but what would be the best way to revert back? Currently the naked domain africangreyparrot.info points to agp.boards.net through CloudFlare. In other words, I have a CNAME "africangreyparrot.info" with the content "customdomain.proboards.com". What do I need to edit so that the naked domain forwards to PB but no longer uses the custom domain "hosting" feature? Thanks very much in advance and thanks for finally making secure URLs happen

Unless I'm doing something wrong, this news spells disaster for myself as I have my own webspace which I pay for yearly. I have thousands of images uploaded there and are all displayed on my forum in hundreds of posts. I've just checked how things will be by going to Admin/Upgrades/Experiments and enabling SSL and then every single one of my images fail to show on my forum. There is absolutely no way I can re link so many images. What does this mean for me? I have been to my webspace host (Easyspace) and it seems they offer something called Rapid SSL Certificates at a yearly subscription.Would this solve the issue? I have no idea how this stuff works. EDIT: I have checked this again this morning. I have now forced SSL from the Admin panel of my forum again, and all of my images are showing now. What does that tell us? As this support site is already https, then surely if my photo shows here, which is hosted on my insecure http webspace - then I have nothing to worry about? Here is a sample photo

So back to my original question. If I purchase the rapid ssl certificate, will everything then work without the need to edit every image URL on my forum?

So back to my original question. If I purchase the rapid ssl certificate, will everything then work without the need to edit every image URL on my forum? Some web hosts offer free SSL certificates. I'd chat with your host to see if that's an option for you. But yes, an SSL certificate on your domain should resolve this issue for you.

Thanks elli - I understand that it should work but my concern is with having to go through 20,000 posts the see where I've posted photos if I need to change the URL to include the "s" My host does offer a Rapid SSL certificate but it is chargeable each year which is a bit of a pain.

You do not need to go through any posts to change the URLs. As mentioned in the first post, your browser will automatically attempt to load the HTTPS URL when this goes live, even if the URL says HTTP.

Do we have any better ideas as to when this shift to https will take place? I notice VS Admin that in your original post 14 days ago, you said it was anticipated in the next week or two? Thank you. GH.

We're at the two week mark. Should we still expect something by this weekend? The experimental one says the results could be "detrimental."

We're at the two week mark. Should we still expect something by this weekend? The experimental one says the results could be "detrimental." The only detrimental effect for me is that when I forced my forum into https, my posted images (including my avatar) disappeared as they are hosted on my own webspace. I've been assured that all will be OK if I purchase an SSL certificate (which from my host is £36GBP per year sadly. As regards the Admin/Upgrades/Experiments, as soon as I reverted back to plain http, all my images returned so not a problem using the experimental switch in the Admin panel. I am now waiting to see when, datewise, PB are going to switch things permanently before I go ahead and pay for a yearly SSL.

Hi everyone,
We've been processing some final updates on our end before the launch of this feature. We anticipate that we will launch with both custom domain support and regular URL support from the get go. We hope to have this live by Friday, but I can't promise.
In the mean time, you can always get SSL right now by going to your Admin Panel (Admin > Upgrades > Experiments > Force use of SSL).
