THIS THREAD IS ABOUT MAKING MASKS. NO MEDICAL CLAIMS ARE TO BE IMPLIED. PLEASE DO NOT TURN THIS THREAD INTO A COVID-19 DISCUSSION. THANKS.
Since I've been laid off, I've been fidgeting because I don't feel useful. Yesterday, I started making masks for my husband, since he works at both a bank and Rite Aid, and it's made me feel productive again.
I started making this pleated mask:
But ended up liking this one because it's easier to make, you don't need elastic (which is hard to find right now), it doesn't bother the ears since it ties in the back, and I feel that it seals better along the sides. Jim finds it more comfortable than the other style, too:
Is anyone else making masks? If so, are you giving them away, selling them, or just using them for your family?

I feel it is right that this should be mentioned, i am not a health professional, but am following news briefings that include medical and scientific experts Please do your own research. The UK government (on medical and scientific advice) only recommend those who may be infected, ot asymptomatic people to wear them Basically so you don't infect others if you cough or sneeze If you are wearing it to protect yourself, there is a possibility that an infected outer surface can be touched (people always fiddle with something that is uncomfortable or itchy), you can then touch the rest of your face or eyes. There is a proper method to put on and take off a mask, and when in use, I did a search, and this is the closest official source i could find, though there is a lot of info ontheBBCnewschannel www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masksOf course, if you are told by law you have to wear them, try to follow official guidelines. Stay asfe.

Is anyone else making masks? Not long ago we would have expected a thread by you on this subject to be related to Halloween or some other celebration. My how the world has changed. 😟 Back on topic: No, I haven't made any. I just social distance to an extreme, wash my hands regularly, wipe down anything others have touched with disinfectant, remain conscious of not touching my face, etc.
I have a get-rich plan which involves creating masks where the primary (and disposable) filter element is made of layers of toilet tissue. Can't seem to procure the necessary raw materials.

My dad made masks for himself and my mom, and he helped me make one for myself out of an old t-shirt using only scissors. Wearing it also makes me look like a bandit, IMO.

Haven't made any, just bought a bunch of bandanas at walmart and threw some rubber bands in there for ear hooks.

The UK government (on medical and scientific advice) only recommend those who may be infected, ot asymptomatic people to wear them Here in the USA, the President and health authorities are recommending that everyone wear a mask when around others because you can be a carrier and be asymptomatic. It's not to protect the wearer, it's to protect those around the wearer. CDC Recommendations To be fair, I was not making any health claims in my post. Here's one of the ones I have made: Not long ago we would have expected a thread by you on this subject to be related to Halloween or some other celebration. My how the world has changed. 😟 Sad, that! My dad made masks for himself and my mom, and he helped me make one for myself out of an old t-shirt using only scissors. Wearing it also makes me look like a bandit, IMO. In the CDC link I posted above, they show how to make one out of a t-shirt. Is that the one you made? Haven't made any, just bought a bunch of bandanas at walmart and threw some rubber bands in there for ear hooks. That's a good hack!

One of my friends has made a few hundred masks over the last week or so. She is taking a break for a few days, but plans to get right back at it. Kudos to those of you putting your Home Ec to use!

We here in CT don't have any choice=-people are being turned away from stores and banks if they don't have a mask. I have a package of throwaways, but someone in my husbands' company had made me one -and it makes me feel claustrophobic. I also made some from cloth, stretchy, hairbands and I will use a coffee filter to add protection. Ive only been out of the house once in the last month so unless my husband brings something home, I should be OK.

I don’t believe in the effectiveness of masks right now. Not when I’m in the thick of it five days a week, handling products and equipment handled by untold numbers of individuals. A virus in aerosol form is the least of my concerns when the carrier droplets will land on me and the items around me, and still has a fair chance of being introduced into my body through absentminded contact. It makes sense for people who have limited contact with others, but you eventually realize how fruitless the measure is when you are subjected to constant contact.
Starting tomorrow I will be rEqUiReD to wear a mask, but I intend to refuse. I have sensitive skin on my face at times and I’m not going to risk breaking out or discomfort just because some ninny customers want to feel comforted when they buy their inessential items (fun fact: we were initially forbidden from wearing masks because it made them feel uncomfortable). I’m not going to sacrifice my comfort for theirs. I won’t participate in public health theatrics.
So no, I’m not making any masks. If I were, though, I wouldn’t settle for cookie-cutter fabric ones unless they were being made in large quantities. But a personal mask? Where’s the ingenuity? If you’re looking for something to occupy your time, why not design a better mask? Comfort, effectiveness, style—there’s room for improvement if you think outside the box.
(I saw a woman with a couple coffee filters strapped to her face by rubber bands. It was the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen in a long time. Don’t follow suit.)

Nope. I don't like wearing masks. Besides I wore one on the 3rd of the month when my niece took me out to the bank and I got some money then I went food shopping for my mom and I. I got so nausea and I thought I would pass out wearing it in Wal-mart that I couldn't even wear it when I went to Hannaford after. So I decided the best thing is to stay inside.

Starting tomorrow I will be rEqUiReD to wear a mask, but I intend to refuse. How'd that go for you? About as well as expected. My shift began at 5 AM and I proceeded to work away with no mask and no problem. I was in front of management at all levels and no one made a fuss. It wasn’t until the “People Lead” (lol, that title) from personnel waddled around the store to ensure strict compliance that I was cornered and told I had to wear a mask or be sent home. This didn’t occur until—wait for it, I know this will shock everyone who’s been paying attention—after the store opened to the public. It’s almost like it’s all for show and has nothing to do with our health! It turns out a lot of people have severe claustrophobia and can’t wear masks, especially not for extended periods of time. One woman who used to work in personnel adamantly refused to wear a mask due to anxiety and was sent home. Another, a department manager, said “£¥€$ it” almost immediately and went home. A second department manager left at lunch and never returned due to overheating from having to work while wearing the mask. Yet another woman—a tough-as-nails midwestern/plains university math professor working at the store only for the insurance—had an anxiety attack and almost went home in tears, but settled for wearing the mask improperly instead. I would have refused and gladly been sent home, but I lacked the protected time off to cover the hours and would have incurred an attendance strike. I confronted the PL about this all being cheap theatrics to placate customers—none of whom are required to wear masks, BTW, because they make the company money and all we do is cost the company money—but agreed to wear a mask when on the floor. He retorted that they had to be worn at all times in every room (except the break room, where I found him hanging out later, OFC) and that was the last straw for me. I told him that I’d wear the mask the whole day Monday, but that it was clear that the entire store must be a hazardous work environment if we have to wear masks at all times and I’m not even receiving hazard pay, so starting Wednesday I’ll be on my two-week leave of absence. He just nodded in understanding and repeated that the mask had to be worn while I was there. It was never my intention to ever take the leave, which we are entitled to take without repercussion, but frankly I was incensed. Not only are we required to wear masks for eight hours a day, but the company is only allowing one mask change per day if we use the boxed masks provided to us. It’s unhealthy for us to wear the same masks for four-plus hours at a time, touching our faces constantly to reposition them back to where they should be after touching everything in the store. We’re not healthcare workers and the government hasn’t mandated masks be worn by everyone in public, so we’re dealing this situation due to pure corporate greed and not necessity. It’s exacerbated by a market manager who has raised the cap on our department’s orders to an absurdly high level and a department manager who is so competitive that she can’t see that meeting his numbers only encourages him to keep moving the goalposts. I actually like my job, but the current situation is a nightmare, with members of management who don’t handle stress well and lack the stones to keep their composure and everything running smoothly. My coworkers were extremely supportive of my decision to take the LOA and they expressed a desire to follow suit. I doubt they will, because some are all talk and others just can’t financially afford to, but I’ve taken the leap anyway and today is my first official day of leave. If the masks are still required when I return I’ll just make do with wearing them as I did Monday (improperly and ineffectively), but I highly doubt they will be. Monday was such an unproductive disaster that I’m certain the masks will be gone by the end of the month.

How many masks are you making a day, wildmaven? Or are you just making them for personal use?
