This is something I've been wondering for a while, what is your preference when it comes to the account/character dilemma. I've written on boards where both have been used, and the board I own currently goes by the one account per user basis. Pros and cons to either? Other thoughts? I'm generally curious about this as it seems to be split down the middle, as far as I can see.

I voted no preference, mainly because it depends on the type of roleplay for me. There are some fandoms/universes that I feel benefit better from one or the other.
Generally, I think it depends on how character heavy the board is. When I used to roleplay on Warrior Cats boards, with the plethora of characters members tended to have and the simpler character creation for cats, it was easier to keep track of them all on one account. Boards that utilize monetary systems or have heavier character details I feel benefit from the one account per character rule.
In the end, I don't mind either one, haha, as long as I'm organized enough to keep track of them all.

I prefer one account per user.
I have seen a few forums where one account per player works better, but very few do in my opinion.

I prefer as many accounts as the role-player wants and can handle. I allow the role-player if they are playing both people in a relationship to have them on one account or if they are playing multiples (such as twins, triplets, etc) Other than that I prefer members to have each character on their own account so it doesn't get confusing who you are role-playing as.

All very interesting points! I'm curious HoudiniDerek, what sort of forums do you think the latter apply to? In general, do you guys think giving people their choice is the best bet, or make it uniform either way? Despite owning a roleplay site that does it the one account per user way, I think after considering it I've always preferred one account per character, especially when a forum has custom mini-profiles and the like.

I particularly prefer one account per user, but it depends a lot on the forum, some work better in one way than another.

In general I don't. I can't recall it now, but years ago when I was doing a review in the GOAYB section, I came across one where it made a lot of sense. It's about the only one I ever recall seeing where it was clearly laid out and made sense to have different accounts for the different characters. Sorry I can't be of more use, but it's been a LOOONNG time.

I'm more familiar with the terms one account "per member" or "per character". Can someone please specify which is "user" and which is "player"? We're all users and players so these terms as separate things are confusing.

I should make a similar thread but ask how many people drink here Only one drink per night, but my body has multiple personality accounts so I spread the love. I find in any setting more than one account per person gets hard to follow, especially if you have an off topic or general chat area.

I voted with 'no preference' mainly because your poll questions mean the same thing. User/Player is heavily interchangable in the RP community and with 'older' role-players such as myself, User/Player mean the exact same thing. In general though, I would prefer one account per character, depending on the type of forum/the fandom. Animal-based (Wolves, Horses, Warriors, Pokemon*) forums can usually get away with one account per member/user, while forums that lean towards Humaniods (Real Life, Harry Potter, Vampire Diaries) benefit from one account per character.
