I get people being huge fans and wanting to "own" parts of history that they find relatable. But I would think that money would be more useful elsewhere. I could have found different uses for it.

But I would think that money would be more useful elsewhere. Apparently six mill doesn't buy what it once did. But seriously, how wealthy does a person have to be so a discretionary purchase can be that expensive. What would he even do with it? Lock it away in a vault? Build a museum so others can view it? That amount of money could feed a lot of hungry people and/or build a lot of affordable habitat and or support a lot of artist just getting started who might add their own beauty to this world, etc, etc, etc. Anyone who has money has a right to spend that money however the see fit. But I just can't fathom why one would choose to spend it that way. Btw, the hammer price (what the seller received) was a mere $5 million. The Buyer's Premium (the auction house's commission) was $1.01 million.

I myself get the questioning of the expense, or this money could have been spent more usefully, the poor, the veterans, the this & that, however I try to steer away from those arguments as it relates to your money is our money. If that's the case, why become an entrepreneur, a doctor, why not just spend everything when you get it because someone will always be after the cash for their purposes.

I could never hoard hundreds of millions of dollars when so many people in my own community are struggling with basic necessities...there's no way. Sure, folks can spend theirs how they want but...I get pretty judgy about it. 6 mil for this guitar....really tho?

I'd get more pleasure out of feeding and clothing my community rather than buying an instrument I'd never touch. I say while pretending to be a Nirvana fan. I don't think I could waste that much on a guitar even if income were disposable.

I don't think I could waste that much on a guitar even if income were disposable. It's possible (but not all that likely) the previous owner thought they would rather have the millions for altruistic purposes than own a guitar they never touch. In any case, is purchasing power ever truly wasted? Or does the choice of how to use it just get transferred to to the seller?
