Just documenting what I eat and comparing it daily to my goals has helped me alot. i should try this Several apps offer the ability to log (scan or enter) and track food. Start by looking for what are the recommendations for you and your goals and log a normal day. You'd be surprised how far off you are. Then start slowly adjusting your diet to fit your goals. I started doing this and with weightlifting i'm down around 30 pounds.
