I am not sure how other countries do it or even how some places in the US are doing it this year, but I have my permit. I bought some fireworks today. We are probably going to light them off in batches, some tonight and tomorrow...maybe even Sunday. Otherwise, I will save some for New Year's Eve. Do you shoot off fireworks?

People have been shooting them off constantly in my neighborhood since mid-May, and I hate it. Every night from 8:00 to 12:00 is an endless parade of extremely loud popping noises. Closing my windows, cranking my white noise machine to max volume, and wearing NRR 33 earplugs helps to reduce the sound, but I can still clearly hear it. I'm hopeful (but not optimistic) that it begins to taper off after the 4th and stops altogether maybe in late August or mid-September.

We don't celebrate 4th July in the UK, but we do celebrate 5th November (Guy Fawkes/Bonfire night), generally people try to limt fireworks to the closest weekend, this year will probably be 7th or 8th. There are a relatively small handful who let off fireworks at other times, like near the end of October once they become available. Reason we try to limit dates is so that animal owners can keep them calm (many dogs get frightened), and the repeated use only extends the worry, specially as fireworks are getting louder.. Only other time is New Year generally, or special events. We don't need a license to buy and use fireworks, except for public events where you also have to be certified.

We left our dog in the house and went somewhere else to do it. That way he was less frightened. We only live around twenty people or so, so it's less disruptive here. Thanks to COVID, most fireworks stands aren't open this year, so yesterday was the first chance I had to buy some. It was fun to shoot them off. Doing some more tonight.

Do you shoot off fireworks? In the past, yes. For the last decade or so, not-so-much. Years ago fireworks weren't legal for sale in Michigan. But my travels often took me to Tennessee and I'd bring back a trunkload. It was fun, but I really enjoyed the big professional shows. One year I went across the border to Windsor Ontario. The view with the Detroit skyline as the backdrop was wonderful.

I saw a lot of fireworks tonight, and I do mean a LOT (some of which are still ongoing at the time of writing this post). Some of them are a few blocks away from our house, and some are next door! And I was struck with awe at the sight of all these fireworks everywhere! Of course, the fireworks scared the crap out of our kitty cat, so she had to go into hiding for a few hours. Poor kitty.

Going to be seeing fireworks in about an hour and a half. The city I am going to, places the fireworks display at the local horse racing track slash city center, so that there would be more than enough of space needed to have social distancing. Basically you have the field and parks next to the track, the track itself, an elementary school grounds, and a church field all surrounding where the fireworks shoot off. Think closer to 50-60 acres.

I've always detested fireworks. I don't mind the structured, planned community events, because there is time to prepare and they only go on for a short time. I *hate* residential and consumer fireworks. People shooting them off at all time of night, disrupting everyones sleep. Then, as I got older, the added fear of my house being burned down by morons shooting off bottle rockets, and my children being kept up to ungodly hours.

Who won?
It sounded like a war last night. There were some seriously big fireworks being used in my neighborhood. Even some mortars that were just one step down from what the professional use at the small municipal shows. Started around 9pm, peaked out somewhere around 10pm and tapered of to occasional shots by 11pm. By midnight it was pretty much over.

We shot ours off between 9pm and 10pm so we had the darkness. After that, there were a few in the area, but very few. It's nice when everyone shoots them off at the same time.

I'm in USA. We used to do fireworks long time ago. Don't anymore. We live rural so people tend to shoot after hours, before hours, all week long here. But if people like doing them & they do it safely, I'm all for that!

I love watching fireworks, yet have seen it only a few times. Most from a distance. It's a lot of fun. However, only if it's at a scheduled event that everyone can prepare for. The idea of people firing them off in their backyards, and that's allowed, baffles me. It was an annoying or weird concept when I was younger, but now I'm so much more aware of the impact it has to pets and people with PTSD etc. I myself would never do it anywhere near homes etc.
I'm Australian. I don't know if it's just the more rural area I live in, though I have visited the city and it was much of the same, but fireworks aren't as huge a deal here as other countries. Firstly, 4th of July is not anything we celebrate. We might have some fireworks New Years, but typically only in big cities or a few morons in their backyard who get drunk and it's a miracle they don't set fire to everything. We have a lot of bushfire dangers here though, so that's probably another reason for firework bans and the rarity of seeing them.
In the right circumstances, I think they're really cool to experience. Sadly, that only accounts for a small percentage of them, as I know so many people suffer when these get set off. I hope things will change over time so we can find better and safer ways of enjoying this that doesn't cause problems and horrible experiences for others.
