Games can be addictive and negative for some people, true, but it can also help some people relax and find calm, so long as the game don't overtake you and become all you are focused on. Restricting playtime to one or a few hours per day is for example a way to game in a healthy, non-obsessive way.

Not letting video games overtake you is definitely the key. It's terrible when that happens, because you lose touch on being social and opportunities to have friends/a social circle. So limiting to a few hours per day is probably the best way to do it.
