joopiter , according to the security log, that member was added to the member group VSTF. That group does have the power Forum Cleanup, which allows the member to delete all threads and posts. Thank you Scott for finding this. Sorry to nitpick this issue, but how did you find this member (pillowofdoom) so quickly in the security log? And where they were added with those privileges. I tried doing an IP, name, filtered searches and for the life of me couldn't locate it. I found it quickly mostly due to experience, however it wasn't that hard like Retread suggested in the Security Log just filter by Group Logs > Member Changes, then in the Notes column look for the name of the member in question. Hi Scott,
I'm the current owner of the forum being mentioned. Is there anyway to find out who gave the guilty party said powers and when? Because it's not a name I'm familiar with. Yes, the security log shows that as well. Here's the line where the member was added and by who: ŞĆĦŇIŦŽ€Ł Added the following members to group VSTF: [2wik]pillowofdoom. May 11, 2017 at 10:57am
I should point out that even though that member group was edited about 3 hours ago by SuperHero, it still has the Forum Cleanup power enabled, and you have 10 members that belong to that group. IMO Forum Cleanup should only be used by the forum creator and not assigned out, especially to such a large number of members.

the reason for that was that at one stage we had someone who was spamming the entire forum with gore, NSFW pics of dead babies etc.....
and it was being done constantly by some kind of bot that kept creating accounts and posting it everywhere. So we needed a team to help clean it up

ScottAlso, please do let us know whether it is possible to pay for a restore? And how much that might cost?

Scott Also, please do let us know whether it is possible to pay for a restore? And how much that might cost? I am not Scott or a PB staff member, but the company policy is that user deleted content — "user" including rogue members whose accounts have deletion powers (as is the case here) and people who illegitimately access another person's account due to poor safety precautions on the part of the account owner — cannot be restored. I can say with 100% confidence that your content will not be able to be restored, as restorations are only offered if content is deleted as a result of a malfunction with the software or other fault outside manual user deletion (eg the loss of data due to PB hardware malfunction). I am sorry it is not a more favourable response

just a member of the said forum
it turns out that the said user "pillowofdoom" was hacked. It looked like the hacker saw our forums as a secondary target and deliberately deleted all the threads. I hope this might have solve some concerns here.

I hope this might have solve some concerns here. "Hack" implies a breach of PB systems which is unlikely. It is far more likely that the member had a weak password or inadvertently stayed logged in on a public computer and someone was able to log in manually onto their account. If the user can provide evidence of a systems breach, though, I'm sure the PB admins would be very appreciative. (:

Forum URL: war-robots-forum.freeforums.net/I just logged into our forum as a moderator to check on things and the entire forum has been emptied. The membership is still there but 5-6 years worth of threads are gone without a trace. What's the best action to take next? Is there a server back-up to proboards forums? Hi joopiter. TolmyKing here. Sorry to hear about the forum. I had decided to check up on it and heard about the news. It sucks that the forum's entire history is just gone in a poof. On the plus side, there is less clutter!

Things that ProBoards must adhere to are items like their TOS and the Privacy Policy.

So suddenly it seems nearly all (too much to check) of our forum seems to have been restored. There is nothing in the log showing who restored it. It just magically reappeared.
While I am extremely grateful, it seems contrary to what was mentioned to me here in this forum and thread. Does this mean that it WAS a breach or problem on the ProBoard end? Or are they just being generous and gracious in helping us out?
Or am I going to receive a bill soon? LOL

Maybe the member moved all the threads to a hidden board and someone was able to move them back to the correct location.
In any event, I'm glad things seem to be back to normal for you! Best of luck.

As the admin (and owner), I can confirm that the threads were definitely deleted. The user who did the deed also deleted his/her account. The logs confirmed it and so did Proboards Staff. There is also no record in the logs of everything being moved back. Finally, as the admin, I can assure you that there were no hidden boards.

We elected to make an exception and restore the deleted content. khooster , it is strongly recommended you read and implement the suggestions in our Help Guide article Preventing Forum Content Deletion to avoid this from happening again to your forum.
