new/assigned member restricted to a single area

taking into the account that  the forum and its content are private
we would like new member account registered to be assigned restriction to only one certain enclosed section;

meanwhile all other existing members can have access to this area too -
to ask questions/state reservations & the new member in question can address them
till unanonimous decision to render the restriction void is in place

(current settings:  registration pending admin approval, all sections read&edited by admin&members only)



What's the best & simplest way to facilitate this?

Write for both -

This will be a three-step process.

Step-1
From your Admin panel, navigate:
Admin Home> Members> Member Groups
Create a new group. You can name it whatever you like, but for purposes of this discussion we'll call it Probation. Select Hidden for the group type. Make no other changes to the group. Because it is a hidden group, the members will not see that they are in the group and will not be able to leave the group on their own accord.

Step-2
From your Admin panel, navigate:
Admin Home> Settings> Forum Settings then click on the Login & Registration tab.
Click the radio button Yes, to the right of: Assign new members to a user group
A new section will appear. Use the dropdown to select the Probation group.

Step-3
From your Admin panel, navigate:
Admin Home> Structure> Categories & Boards
For each Category where the Probation group will be denied access,
Hover over the name of the category and a set of icons will appear on that line.
Click the Edit Properties icon.
A popup will appear.
To the right of Except members in the groups:, click the words Add Group

A second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.
Click the Save Changes button on the first popup.
The first popup will disappear.

Step-3a

When you've made this change to all categories where Probation group will be denied access, is there more than one Board in the Category where the Probation group is allowed access?

If so, you will need to change the Permissions for every board(s) in that category that you want to deny access to the Probation group.

Hover over the name of the board and a set of icons will appear on that line.
Click the Edit Properties icon.
A popup will appear.
Click on the Permissions tab.

To the right of
Who can view the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words Add Group
A second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.

To the right of
Who can access the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words Add Group
A second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.

To the right of
Who can create threads on the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words Add Group
A second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.

To the right of
Who can reply to threads on the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words Add Group
A second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.

To the right of
Who can create polls on the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words Add Group
A second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.

Click the Save Changes button on the first popup.
The first popup will disappear.

Now that all the necessary step have been completed, all new members will be restricted to just one board.

If/when a decision is reached to allow a particular member posting privileges forum-wide, the forum Owner or an Administrator can go to that members Profile page, click the Groups tab, and remove the member from the Probation group.

I want one single board
1. where only those who I authorize can enter (see the board - read/write)
2. where those who are excluded, are not even aware of it

thereddiamanthe, this is also done with member groups.

You would create a hidden member group, then go to the board you want allow special access at Admin > Structure > Categories & Boards, click on the board name and then the Edit Properties button.

In the pop-up box click the Permission tab. Change the drop-downs to "Custom" and then the option appears for "And members in the groups"

Use the Ad Group link to add the member group you created for the special access. You can add more than one group if desired.

Do this for View and Access so that only you and those in the special group can see and access the board. Adjust the Create Threads, Reply to Threads and Create Polls based on what you want those special members to be able to do.

Whenever the "custom" option is selected, this automatically gives you the forum creator the permission whether you are in a group or not.


The final step is just to add the members you want to the group. You can do this by going to their profile, click the Groups tab. Find the special group and then click the link for 'Add this Member to Group'

thereddiamanthe , be careful about making members group leaders. A group leader can make other users members of the group (although I'm not sure if that's true in the case of a Hidden group).

Step-3a is only necessary if you have a Category where the Probation group has access, but there are boards in that category you don't want them to view or access.

so how do I add members to the group that wanna exclude
from one single board

thereddiamanthe, if you use the directions I provided then you would not need to exclude members as you will have set that board up to only be viewed and accessed by the members in that special group. The other members are automatically excluded as they would not be able to view and access unless you add them to the group.

Note, this is different from the first part of your thread. There you were restricting new members from sections of the forum - through exclusion. This last request is achieved by doing a restricted inclusion.

Been parsing the members settings & others but can't see the option.
