thereddiamanthe This will be a three-step process.
Step-1From your Admin panel, navigate:
Admin Home> Members> Member GroupsCreate a new group. You can name it whatever you like, but for purposes of this discussion we'll call it Probation. Select
Hidden for the group type. Make no other changes to the group. Because it is a hidden group, the members will not see that they are in the group and will not be able to leave the group on their own accord.
Step-2From your Admin panel, navigate:
Admin Home> Settings> Forum Settings then click on the
Login & Registration tab.
Click the radio button
Yes, to the right of:
Assign new members to a user groupA new section will appear. Use the dropdown to select the Probation group.
Step-3From your Admin panel, navigate:
Admin Home> Structure> Categories & BoardsFor each Category where the Probation group will be denied access,
Hover over the name of the category and a set of icons will appear on that line.
Click the Edit Properties
icon.
A popup will appear.
To the right of
Except members in the groups:, click the words
Add GroupA second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the
Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.
Click the
Save Changes button on the first popup.
The first popup will disappear.
Step-3aWhen you've made this change to all categories where Probation group will be denied access, is there more than one Board in the Category where the Probation group is allowed access?
If so, you will need to change the Permissions for
every board(s) in that category that you want to deny access to the Probation group.
Hover over the name of the board and a set of icons will appear on that line.
Click the Edit Properties
icon.
A popup will appear.
Click on the
Permissions tab.
To the right of

Except members in the groups:
click the words
Add GroupA second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the
Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.
To the right of
Who can
access the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words
Add GroupA second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the
Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.
To the right of
Who can
create threads on the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words
Add GroupA second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the
Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.
To the right of
Who can
reply to threads on the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words
Add GroupA second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the
Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.
To the right of
Who can
create polls on the board...
Except members in the groups:
click the words
Add GroupA second popup will appear.
Tick the box to the left of Probation.
Click the
Done button on the second popup.
The second popup will disappear.
Click the
Save Changes button on the first popup.
The first popup will disappear.
Now that all the necessary step have been completed, all new members will be restricted to just one board.
If/when a decision is reached to allow a particular member posting privileges forum-wide, the forum Owner or an Administrator can go to that members
Profile page, click the
Groups tab, and remove the member from the Probation group.
