It happens a lot. We generally appreciate the ones who comes back in and let us know they didn't pay for anything - had we realized and it was done purposefully. we would have most likely tried to catch you. I've had a few good samaritans run back in after I've checked them out and let me know there was an item in their cart they completely forgot apart. It shows their true moral compass for goodwill when they come back in unprompted and do the right thing, verses the few who'll look at it as "well, they didn't stop me or anything, so it's free!"

I'm one of those. If I check the receipt when I leave and see something hasn't scanned, or I have received too much change, i go back and make it right. But I don't speak up when i have been overcharged. Always makes me laugh when i get followed around the store by security, which happens a lot. Must have one of those faces.

How about forgetting a kid at the supermarket? My Ex did this once with our new one month old boy. Raging hormones and another 2yo whose default was often tantrum can do that to you. Luckily I worked just up the road and the staff knew me.
Back when the kids where small I often put stuff in the pushchairs rain cover at the local high-street shop. Carrying a basket, holding a toddler hand and steering a pram are subtractively exclusive. One has to go.
Did return to pay a few times. But I know that the bar code was accidentally scanned more than once for a pack of 4 beers. So all's even.
BTw, the scanners at the entrance/exit can't read barcodes, they just work with a visible, optical scan. They're only an automatic inventory/cashier checks.
The only current working model in shops is RFID (radio-frequency identification) chips on expensive stuff. And as mentioned they're not very reliable.

This never happened to me, but knowing my luck I'd probably be either all the way, or halfway home by the time I figured out I had an item I didn't pay for. Then I would've had to go all the way back and explain the situation because the last thing I want is to be considered a crook and all the nasty stuff that comes with the title.
I can be a forgetful person, just thankfully never had something like this happen.

Never happened to me. Once i received a huge online order from Lovely wholesale. There where 10 extra dresses which i didn't pay for. I contacted the costumer service and explained the situation. That was just a simple mistake of someone who packed my parcel. And i understand that, the order was really massive. Anyways, they said thanks for letting them know and that i can keep those pieces as a present for being a loyal costumer. Sometimes with companies like Amazon if you're honest with them they'll just let you keep said item. It's less of a headache for them to start a return and go through everything that's missing.

I forgot to pay for a coffee once as I was walking out I heard someone say she just stole a coffee. I turned around and paid for it.
