Maybe with people who are more used to Discord, Facebook and other modern communication, they prefer it over forums for that reason, for the simple fact that they are not as used to using forums.
Forums are what I'm most used to, so it will remain my main way of online discussion. I signed up for my first forum in 2004, so it's not a habit I'll be dropping.

The ability to search for an answer to a common computer problem on the internet is a great thing. I don't think we will lose that.

I think it's a combination of various social media sites, rather than just Discord. Forums have been dying since before Discord was even a thing. That said, Discord is definitely not helping forums. While there still does exist forums that thrive in activity (most notably Reddit), they are few and far between.
It's sad too, because forums have always been my favorite way to communicate on the internet.

Boy! Am I behind? I never heard of Discord until I read this thread. Guess I am one of those who started with Forums back in year 2000. I thought they were the greatest. Such an improvement over chat rooms. I thought forums were the greatest then, and I still think that is true. I go occasionally, 2 or 3 times a week to Facebook, just to keep up with family. I spend many, many hours every day in my ProBoards Forum. I love it there and I love my members. We know and care about each other. I love Forums and hope they live forever.

I wonder if it's almost a generational situation? I mean, if MySpace were to reopen and operate as they once did, would we flock back and abandon facebook? My spouse loves tiktock, I cannot stand it. The videos are too short usually, badly edited and usually not that interesting. I grew up with youtube videos and while so many creators have changed for better or worse, there are still many that are consistent with quality content. Discord is a strange one for me. It's a moderately clean interface and sort of a supplement/competitor for reddit, which I do browse frequently. But, due to nostalgic reasons, I am still comfortable with and prefer message forums like ProBoards. I mean, I literately grew up on this site, as a teenager. I think every platform has it's time and audience. Forums will not go away, but I think they will slowly evolve and become something we may not recognize as a traditional forum one day. Only time will tell. If Myspace came back. I'd probably log back into my account. (I already have actually. lol.) But, I've already abandoned facebook, and only use it for the business side. TikTok is a lot of fun depending on your algorithm. Mine is Minecraft, EDM, and reddit stories. lol. I prefer discord over Forums as of late. It's faster, live chatting, don't need to constantly refresh a page to see if you get a reply. It's like Instant Messages. I like those better over forums. I didn't mind it in the Role Play side or support when it was needed. I don't see forums going away anytime soon though. Support forums for MANY genre's of life are still going. Tech support for computers, or coding, etc. But, I'm not sure if forums will ever change to be honest. It's outdated software, but still going. I see even support forums going to Discord lately. Even Reddit subs have their own discord now.

I was about to ask if someone were to please post a link to whatever this thing called 'discord' is. I mean it sounds like argument. Why would I want to go there? But the more that I read this thread, it sounds like a type of an online place to go do something. I don't know. Reddit is something I've heard but never knew what that was about either. I've been offline tending to family stuff for so long I"m more lost than usual. LOL!

The main complaint I've seen regarding Discord is long-term message storage and searchability, especially when it comes to hobbies or media that only have important information and documentation stored on Discord. I've personally had an aversion to joining servers for this reason since there's no particularly easy way for it to be organized beyond single-level channels and pinned messages. Usually a forum, wiki, or documentation website gets the job done much better and has much more precise thread or article searches. Information like that should prioritize accessibility over interaction. I'll gladly join a server if I have further questions, but I don't believe I should have to for the bare minimum. I doubt it'll replace reddit tbh. Lol. But at the same time. There is a search feature on discord. It's what I usually do for any problems with something. If there are good admins/staff. Usually they'll link to the more specific posts if requested by users. You can create threads now too, and link entire thread. But I doubt discord will replace support forums anytime soon. A few inherent problems with Discord being used for this purpose: - I can't Google a Discord thread - I have to be part of the server to begin with in order to search it - Likewise, even if I'm part of the server the responses to the thread don't currently get indexed Reddit is thankfully both searchable and indexed by Google, but the branching comment structure adds an extra level of complexity I personally feel I could do without when looking for solutions.

True, but also at the same time. Chances are, if you're apart of a certain community and they to also have a Discord. You can search the discord for certain support posts. I actually did this with a yaml code in a Minecraft Coding community, and I was able to find the exact reason why I had broke it within mere seconds. But googling it yielded nothing specific to my issue. But to OTHER issues that left me confused as to why it took me from one thing to another. lol. I feel like, if you're in a specific community for something, then you'll find your specific issue as to opposed to the 100k results that you have to weed out. If you can't find it, then asking for help in that discord, and you'll get tons of responses quick. I still have a question unanswered on a computer support forum with 5000 views but 0 responses. haha. That was 3 years ago, and that forum is active enough to get a response. Now for the most part. If I am not searching for anything broad, that isn't part of something very specific I was looking for, then I'll receive my answer after a few pages down.

I totally agree. Forums are better organised and easier to navigate and you can search via Google.
Discords are overrated, but can be used for sending PMs, live chatting and video/audio calls. I'm active in 4-5 Discords, but are inactive in the other 40-50 (but it's still usable for passive advertising = advertising without posting or being active).
Reddit's are messy and unorganised, but they are a good way to get instant traffic to forums. I think that I currently moderate 10 sub-Reddits.

Reddit gets more hatred than I think is really deserved, alot of categories I'm on for the most part have decent staff but one annoying thing some try to be so strict they'll delete your topic for no reason or just asking a question or you'll get you don't have enough flair whatever that means I haven't figured it out yet. If you can see past the idiocy and NSFW stuff it can be entertaining to read at times.

If you can see past the idiocy and NSFW stuff it can be entertaining to read at times. Oh yeah, I didn't mean to come across as outright slamming Reddit as bad or anything as a result of my viewpoint. I've added it as a keyword to a fair amount of my Google searches because I know that the community for the specific thing I'm looking up knows their stuff. My only real complaint there was that since every comment is capable of branching off I have to navigate them a lot more carefully. That's part of why I like the reply structure on sites like Stack Overflow. There's the main post, the replies, then a single level of comments on those replies. And that's about it. I think for general discussions the branching comment structure is perfectly fine, but most of the time I end up on Reddit it's so that I can find an answer to something rather than for the sake of browsing Reddit itself. I'm all business.

I would but I believe staff aren't that keen on other software links but I can say theirs a certain YouTuber user called Linus tech tips and certain gba temp gaming sites out there with big communities.
