I guess I’m even worse, because I’d rather not use either type of checkout and get my groceries ordered online with home delivery. So much more efficient for me. If I do pop to a supermarket for a handful of items, I’ll almost always use self checkout because it’s usually quicker.

I'm glad the number of stores on that platform started accepting EBT. The last time I used the app prior there was only one or two (Aldi being one of them). Needless to say I can get used to the online delivery, but I'm scared that will only promote unhealthy habits so I'm trying not to get addicted.

It wouldn't surprise me if online shopping for food, pet food, and everything else in between gets done online in the end, that's the direction its all going in, here in Canada anyway.
For example, my boy (cat) has digestive issues so finding the brand he needs is pretty much nil here but found it at Amazon no problem even the dry food for him as well so, with that being said, I'll be shopping for his food at Amazon.
There's lots of private companies that shop and deliver groceries here in Canada, then there's door dash and Uber as well that I can remember offhand.
Clerks will be a thing in the past whether it will be in my time or much later, but there will always be someone or something delivering the food you want to your door.

It would be weird if everything goes to online shopping though since that seems literally less space for commercial properties. It would be interesting if shopping centers start getting torn down to make way for more houses that we will never fill because nobody can afford them. Even now it seems like the few necessary retail spaces are grouped together in small clutters across various cities and towns. Though I would imagine there would still exist places to go such as a farmer's market and night market in more rural areas.

I honestly cannot see this ever replacing the need of human clerks in grocery stores. I'm sure there are plenty of people who go grocery shopping with a maxed out shopping cart that would much prefer to have someone who has the practice to scan and bag their groceries than having to rely on their own merits for a time-consuming filled to the brim cart. I can see it replacing human clerks at fast food restaurants and convienence stores where the number of total purchases allow for the ease and quickness that self-checkout offers. I cannot see how this can be a wide replacement for human clerks since grocery stores will likley continue to operate with human clerks and even baggers for years to go. As a former retail employee I can confirm that they will not be replacing associates.. at least in the retail world I was in. In some instances they were going back into the stores they had replaced them with and installing more manned cashier registers. Though, I do believe that we are nearing an era with Grocery Delivery becomes quite large. Larger than it already is.. and more prominent, however, I doubt this will eat into them being replaced.

I use and prefer self checkout. I find the interaction of manned checkouts unnerving. I also find it quicker, less stressful, and appreciate the increased privacy too. I am hoping my local lidl installs some, as i find the checkout experience there horrible, currently, and i avoid it these days unless i really have to go.

This is how I feel, I fear some of us think so far into the future they find technology is going to wipe out humanity. Their are still some annoyance with self check out for example if you want to buy alcohol you still have to wait for a worker to confirm your ID when imo the machine should be able to scan your ID and confirm it given that their are barcodes already on IDs but assuming that's legal areas they have to come to terms with the government on. Others are fruits and veggies those tiny stickers love to fall off which requires calling an employee over to ask what the code id is. Other times the card reader might be broke so again another reason you may have to call a worker over. At the end of the day it's just a computer that tries to make our life more easy. Work is all about adjusting to new things around us after all, your work place might be different ten years from now. Grab and go groceries may be around by then but at the end of the day their will always be use for humanity some place, life isn't I,Robot.

I had to Google instacart and EBT so assume those are American things. Is online grocery delivery not common over there then? Most of the major supermarkets have their own delivery service here. I actually find it healthier, as you tend to order exactly what you want rather than walking round an actual shop and thinking “those snacks are on offer, I’ll have 10”. I find that even with the delivery fee, I’ll spend less than in store. Also I don’t drive, so it’s way easier.

EBT is a government assistance program which hardly pays crap, Instacart is a hub center for retail stores so it's like Door dash but grocery related that anyone can use. Food delivery isn't quite new it just hasn't been this large, I prefer ordering small things online and stocking up in store personally. I get to look at the item myself before buying and it's a decent way to socialize with others you may run into. Everyone needs food. Then if something is wrong you have to go through that annoying of a process. It's great for people without cars or if you get sick other than that.
